In numbers can I create a template with unlimited pages, since I may have as many as 600 items? Also, once I have a numbers document, how do I add pages. I tried, but altho they show to exist on the print menu, the last page does not show as a part of it.

How can I create a template with unlimited pages, since I may have as many as 600 or more items.

Also, once I've created a document and placed items in it, can I still add pages. I tried it, but altho the last page shows on the print menu, it is on a page I cannot reach. In other words, I have full access to the document...except the last page I added.

Thanks.

The answer to your question is Yes.

Open a blank template.

Grab the "add row" handle on the table and drag down to create as many as 65000+ rows. The limit is somewhere around there.

Save it as a template.

Use that template when you need a long table.

You can go one step further and make multiple sheets with long tables in them and save that as a template.

You can "Capture" that table (Format/Advanced/Capture Table). Then, in documents based off of that template, you can add more copies of the table the same way you would add other tables. It will show up in the list of tables under the "Table" icon on the toolbar.

I don't know whay you would want 65000+ rows (as close to "unlimited" as you can get with Numbers) in every table you make but you can do it if you prefer to stick with Excel's way of doing things.

I don't know what you mean by "not part of the working document". If you mean it is not part of the table on the previous sheet, that is correct. Just like a second worksheet in Excel is not part of the first worksheet.

Your descriptions lead me to believe you have not read the Numbers Users manual or there is a problem with your document. Every sheet and every table and every page should be accessible.

Hi Jay,

Infinite tables may be an excellent concept for Excel, but it's contrary to the design model of Numbers.

You can create a template with a large number of rows (to a maximum of 65,535 on a single table), but I think you would find it quite frustrating and essentially unusable.

You can get some idea of the issues that would arise by creating a Numbers document with, say, three times the number of rows as you expect to have items, That would be 1800 rows at one row per item. Throw in another 200 rows to bring it up to a round 2000.

Open the Blank template. Unless things have changed. this will open a document with one Sheet, on which there is one Table with 13 columns and 45 rows, including one header row and one header column.

To increase the number of rows to 2048 (the first power of 2 greater than 2000), start by selecting rows 1 through 19, then pressing option-down arrow. This inserts 19 rows, bringing the total rows to 64.

Now repeat the following two steps four times:

1. Click on the column reference tab for column A to select the whole column.

2. Press option-down arrow to add as many rows as are selected to the table.

After the fourth iteration, you should see the selection rectangle on cell A1025.

Save your table as a Template.

The new 2048 row blank table will now be available in the "My Templates" section of the Template Chooser.

Enjoy.

Barry

PS: I've never experienced the difficulty you note on adding a sheet. The sheet is added and includes a blank table. Both are part of the current Document, but both are also independent from the Table(s) and Sheet(s) already contained in the document until you establish some connection between them. Perhaps that's what you mean by 'not recognized as part of the working document.'

Regarding "...another thing their programmers could fix":

If you think this is a bug, you should send Apple a bur report asking to have it fixed. If it's a feature you'd like to see implemented, you should send Apple a feature request.

Apple does not actively monitor these user-to-user forums; here you're talking to/with software users, not Apple developers. For bug reports or feature requests, talk directly to Apple through the Feedback channel. In Numbers, you'll find a menu item, Provide Numbers Feedback, in the Numbers menu.

Barry,

Thanks a lot. Your advise on expanding the template did just what I wanted it to do.

ON ANOTHER TOPIC: I'd like to clear out some of the unworkable templates, but Numbers help advise wasn't much help as it told me "in the finder go to the template you want to delete and drag it to the trash." Fine, but dumb me can't find WHERE in the finder these templates are stored by Numbers. Can you come to the rescue again?

Thanks,

Jay

Hi Jay,

You can remove templates that you have created, but not the ones that were supplied with the application.

To get to the folder containing your templates, start in the Finder.

Press and hold the option/alt key as you go to the Go menu and select Library.

Then follow the rest of the path below:

Library > Application Support > iWork > Numbers > Templates > My Templates

Then select the template file(s) you wish to remove and do one of the following:

• Drag the item(s) to the Trash

• Go File > Move to Trash

• Press command-delete

Items can be recovered from the Trash until you Empty the Trash, a menu item in the Finder menu.

Regards,

Barry
