I have inherited my deceased brother's 15" MacBook Pro (mid2010). The battery no longer keeps a charge, so it must stay plugged in. Can I change the battery myself? If so, must I use an apple battery to replace? Please advise.

Apple will not sell you one of their batteries for you to install. They insist on installing it for you.
I have seen on Amazon what appear to be OEM graymarket Apple batteries. If you do choose to purchase one of them, be advised that you will need a #0 Triwing driver to perform the installation.

I think I must have one, because I have lots of computer parts, tools, hard drives, memory, etc. I look to make sure I have this particular one. I saw batteries on amazon as well, but was unsure about which one to get...items that say they're compatible aren't always once you get them :-)
Go to an Apple store as the battery will be cheaper and then the cost of labor to change it will bring the total up to around the same price as those off Amazon or wherever. And you will get a basic warranty, 90 days I think, on the battery.
