I have purchased a lot of books from Amazon for my kindle. However, I would like to terminate my connection with amazon and go with Apple. Can I download all my Kindle books to an Ipad before I stop my amazon account? thank you

Of course. Just download the Kindle application to access to all the books purchased from Amazon in the iPad
You should be able to install the Kindle app and the Amazon app for the iPad through which you should be able to get your books (no guarantee.)
