My iPhone 4S will not sync with iTunes

(This a recent problem for me. I used to have no trouble syncing my phone.)

When I try to sync my iPhone 4S with iTunes, it does not sync any music, movies, books, or photos. All my apps are still available on the phone.

I have the latest version of iTunes and iOS. I have tried every possible combination of settings, I have restarted my MacBook Pro and my iPhone, I have done a "restore from backup" on my phone, I have restored the phone to factory settings and then tried to sync, and I have tried disconnecting the phone multiple times. The only thing I can think of that I have not tried yet is reinstalling iTunes, but I haven't had the time to try that yet.

Has anyone else experienced the same problem and solved it? If so, could you give me any tips on how to fix this?

Much appreciated!

I had same problem - able to sync mail, contacts, calendars and notes but not itunes music, etc. Tried using a different cable -- thanks for the suggestion, sadly it didn't work for me.

BUUUUT what did work for me, bizarrely, was going into my itunes library and manually dragging one album onto my iphone, under "devices". This seemed to magically unlock whatever was blocking itunes from syncing and it synced my music -- I have selected playlists for syncing and it took on all that information. Weird!

Just a friendly reminder for those like me, your iPhone/iPad can only be connected with one iTunes library at a time. To reconnect it to the current library, go to the summary tab of your device, scroll to the bottom and check 'Manually manage music and videos'. This will prompt the device to be authorized on your current iTunes. Beware, this requires your iphone to be erased (for some logic that eludes me).

Hope this will save someone else some time.

I had the same problem and finally i could make it work again:

I updated iTunes to Version 11.0.3 and everything worked as usual.

My problem was:

- iTunes would sync everything on my iPhone 4 but music

- the status bar on the iPhone info page in iTunes on the bottom showed only a yellow bar with "other" (no music, apps...). When syncing, it switched to the real info for a short time

- all the songs were visible but gray (with a circle next to it) when selecting the iPhone music in iTunes

I tried without success:

- restarting iPhone / Computer

- restoring a backup

- using different cables / usb ports

- restoring factory settings

- manually adding / removing music

I hope your problems will be solved by updating iTunes so you don't have to do the other unneccessary steps.

I had a similar problem & I just solved it. I have had a very difficult time syncing. It would take a long time & stall. I fixed it by using my original Apple USB cable that came with the iPhone.

History:

About a week ago, I tried to sync again after not syncing for about 6 weeks. It wouldn't work. The first time, I left it in trying to sync for 29 hours, while carrying around my iPhone with my MBP attached to it, because I was scared to eject it while it was trying to sync. I finally unplugged it and it was just fine. I continued to attept to sync, but it kept stalling at the beginning of backup or somewhere between 0% and 20% complete for step 2 of 7 (backup). So, it would never get to the syncing steps. Sometimes, iTunes would say it couldn't recognize my iPhone or something like that. Usually, it would only start to work in one of the USB ports & wouldn't even be recognized as plugged in in the other USB ports. I was thinking that I had messed up my iPhone because of waiting too long to sync or had updated too many applications between syncs or that there were corrupted applications that were preventing it from syncing or that something was wrong with the iphone or MBP USBs. I did start trying to do only a backup instead of the full sync, but that didn't help either. It still stalled in step 2 of 4.

Finally, I retrieved my old cord that came with my iPhone & tried a backup with that & it worked just fine within a few minutes. So, I did a full sync & that was speedy also. I realized that I had been having these problems since I started using a 4 feet long cable that I purchased from Walmart. The first time using this cable for a sync, it caused problems that erased my iPhone and made me need to reload my iphone from a backup, which took a loooong time. I think this cable is sold under the brand "Onn" and is made to be distributed by Walmart. I exchanged it to give it another chance. So far, it is working.

I had the same problem too, after using every cable I had in the house I changed my iphone backup to backup to my PC and not to icloud. The next time I synced my phone it started to download all my new apps to my PC, then I changed it back to backup to icloud. My guess is Apple made a change in one of the last iOS updates to backup apps to the icloud only. Hope this helps fix your issue too….

I cannot sync anything although the sync bars on my IMac appear to be going through the process: No sync with contacts, calendar, photos, music. I have same problem as everyone else. The iphone and itunes updates appear to have fouled up sync. Imac entires won't sync with iphone and vise versa. I have snow leopard and iphone G3.

im not sure how it works though, because i switched the cable, which is just my extra phone charging chord, and then when i went to change the setting to manually sync, it asked me if i wanted to erase and sync, wich meant erase everything on my phone and replace it with whats in my library. and last time i did that, it completely took everything off my phone and left it empty, so im not sure i want to do that again. but i dont know about the manually sync thing, i need more help?

What I've learned, through trial and error, is that some cables work and some don't. Right now the only way I can sync my phone is using my iPad cable. I have no idea why other cables don't work or why it won't sync over the WiFi but I've given up trying to make it sync any other way. There are only so many hours in the day and I don't have time to sort it out as long as this cable works.
