Open the Mac App Store and try buying it. If your configuration isn't compatible with 10.8.2, it won't allow the purchase.
Installing Mac OS X 10.7 isn't necessary or helpful when upgrading to 10.8.2.

If your machine supports Mountain Lion you can purchase it via the App Store app.
Tied with Neil, again.
I am looking to upgrade from 106 to 10.8,
have never updated OS before and I am wondering will the upgrade wipe all my exisiting software?
Is there anything I need to do to preserve my exisiting software - Adobe CS5 etc??

It shouldn't affect your existing software but be aware that 10.6 supported legacy PPC software transparently but was the last OS X to do so; Mountain Lion won't. So check your existing software to be sure you can either live without any PPC-only software or that there's an Intel version available
10.8.2 isn't available from MAS, you can only get 10.8.3 from there.
Thanks, I will back up everything and give it a go next week, the majority of my software should still be ok so
What's PPC software?
made an error.
Oooops! See you edited your post. For the OP, PPC software is power PC software that only runs on older OSs, such as Snow Leopard and earlier.😉
