I am using BT Broadband home hub and want to use my time machine - Can I turn the wireless router off in TM?

Hi,

I have BT home hub which is now my main router in the house. I also have Apple TV which works off the router and a network adapter around the house which is perfect for all my needs. However, I also have a time machine but haven't used it for a while now as it's internal router overrides my current network which causes problems.

Being that i'm not very 'technical' I was hoping someone could give me a 'guide for dummies' instruction on how to turn off the wireless signal inside my time capsule without messing up the BT router?

Applications folder/Utilities/Airport Utility - select the Time Capsule, then 'Edit', then 'Wireless'. In the top dropdown menu, Network Mode, there is a selection of off.

Yes, you will need to launch Airport Utility and click on the wireless tab then click the network mode to off.

Thanks guys,

Sorry, just to clarify, I need to connect the ethernet cable to my home hub and my TC first before i can do this?

And once i've done this will my stuff be backed up via the cable or wireless?

I know these are probably very stupid questions but like I said, i'm a div when it comes to this stuff!

Yes, you should connect your TC to your home hub first then launch Airport Utility. Once you turned off the wireless the backup will be via the Ethernet cable. You need to make sure you setup Time Machine for TC hard drive.

I used to have the Time Machine set up to back up from my hard drive so hoping it's already done. I'm going to give it a go now. I may return!

I have connected the two and followed instructions however Airport Utilty says 'No configured Airport Base stations have been found, Airport Utility will continue searching'. It's been doing this for a while now?

Does the Time Capsule show up in Finder? If not, check your connections. Just to clarify, when you open Airport Utility you aren't seeing the Time Capsule where the screen shot below shows four?

Make sure you have the Ethernet cable plug in to the 2nd,3rd or 4th Ethernet port not the first.

No, I think you are right. I don't have any time capsule showing.

i have checked my leads and there is only one available port available on my BT hub called Cige4 which I don't think is the right port. The others are bing used by other equipment in the studio.. The time capsule is fine and is in the correct port?
