I am attempting to connect a Samsung s27a850D monitor rated at 2560x1440 to my 15" macbook pro with retina however the I can not increase the resolution in system preferences above 1920X1080 - I can not find a driver from samsung and called apple for help (without success)
Would appreciate any suggestions

You likely don't need a driver. I don't know of any monitors that do.
You need a MiniDisplay Port to DVI-D adaptor and a DVI-D cable, assuming your monitor has a DVI-D input port.
I believ eyou need the thunderbolt to dua link DVI adapter for high resolutions.

Yes, but it also has to be the dual-link kind. The single-link cable cannot do that resolution.
You are correct. I meant DVI Dual Link when I said DVI-D but I did not explicitly say "Dual Link".
