Hi. I am going to Europe next week. Just bought iPad 4. Want to video call for free. Just heard about face time rather than Skype. Are these free? Do I need a cellular chip? HELP.

Got a 3G iPad. Going to Canary Islands from Uk.
Want to use it abroad as u no for FaceTime. Called 02 for a pay and go package, guess wot they tell me, I.cannot use iPad cellular abroad, only where there is wi fi!
Am I going mad? Or are they right?

Can't speak specifically for the Canary Islands, but generally speaking, they are wrong. 02 may not be able to set you with a plan (I'm honestly not familier with them since I'm in the US), but you do not need their permissin to use a short term plan from a privider doing business at your destination.
For Pay & Go this may be true. Many pre-paid plans do not allow for international roaming. You can activate this on a regular pos-paid plan in most cases.
This is true, you may be able to get a pre-paid SIM from a local provider in Tenerife.
Alternatively, you can rent a portable MiFi device through a service like Tripneter. I've used their service on mainland Spain several times.
The advantage is that you can connect up to 5 devices so all of you can be on Facetime or Skype or email or....
Be aware that cellular speed is limited so connecting too mny data intensive devices will slows things considerably.

Your welcome. I really think Tripneter is your best option. It's a few Euro a day and no need to mess with your operator or pre-paid at your destination.
