Black borders : Display size does not fit the full LCD-TV screen size

Hi,
my mac-mini-intel is connected via DVI>HDMI to a brand new 46"-HDready-LCD-TV. The quality is perfect, but I am upset with the black borders on each side of the screen. Whatever the display (Finder, Application, DVD, FrontRow,...) it doesn't fit the size of the TV screen, while the TV programs do.

I tried every set up, it doesn't make any difference, except when I ask for "full screen" in the display monitor panel, then, the size is too big for the screen and I can't see the menu bar anymore...

help !

That's good to know. I think it's sort of silly that this happens in this way because you can get yuorself royally stuck. Although, given your using 3rd party software to provide unsupport resolutions then I guess it's not entirely Apple's fault. But still…

Apple's fault or not ? this is arguable. I don't usually like to blame Apple, but take this in account amd make yourself your opinion :

1) the mac-mini is sold with no screen. So Apple assumes people will connect it to various screens (TV, monitors, projectors, ...). Shouldn't Apple provide as many different resolutions as possible to fit all kind of screens ? Why not more resolutions for HD-TV screens ?
I know it's different, but Apple does provide many printer drivers, doesn't it ?

2) It's Apple responsability to help customers find their way with it's own OS, isn't it ? Although I made 2 long calls, nobody at Apple-assistance has suggested to look into the "library>displays" folders...

I went throught the "pans down" procedure a few times in trying to gt a reasonable non-stretched view on my Samsung 4272. I have yet to solve the problem, with wither SwitchresX or ConfigDisplayX, but I did find a way to reboot after the picture was not accepted on the monitor, and that was to hold the SHIFT key down as I booted and hold it down until the sign in screen appears, which seemed to take quite a while (but a lot less time than reinstalling the system).

You're right, that is the correct procedure to get some display back.

then, you should follow the steps I described earlier (..;windowserver... and overrides...)
