Can't Burn CDs (emachines T3830) - used to be able to

All of a sudden, I can't burn CDs. I was able to up until recently. I installed the Acura TTS software to allow me use my IPOD in a new car and was wondering if anyone knew if this interfered with the burn function. Orif the CD diagnostics indicate some other problem?

Here are the diagnostics:

You're running a very old version of the firmware on that drive. You should check the Gateway support site to see if they have an update for you.

Go to the support site and enter your serial number. (It will tell you where to find it on the computer.) And look to see if they have any updates for your LG 4481B.

Also, is there any particular reason you're burning at 4x? Did you do that manually as part of debugging the problem?

Please assist. Am an English teacher and thus a total technophobe - so please keep it simple!

Using iTunes to burn CDs has become increasingly impossible; I keep getting Error 4310 messages. I've used a CD-ROM cleaner disc to check there's no prob with the laser, but that's made no difference.

I ran CD Diagnostics and...

Gateway owns emachines so I guess they shared parts to produce a less expensive and apparently less uselfull computer. Emachines support says there is no update for the driver but I'll look around the site. I did update the chipset but that didn't solve the issue. FYI. It appears to me that I'm stuck - emachines says no update available but the problem is the driver.

Is switching to another computer difficult? I have a laptop (Dell 600) that I could use?

Er, 'switching CD Media'...?

As in, changing the type of CD they're trying to burn to?

If so, done that. Got my hopes up: having failed miserably to burn to about 15 in a row from one manufacturer, it burned beautifully to the first of a different manufacturer's bunch. Then failed miserably for another 8 goes with the new CDs.

So then I swore copiously and left it at that.

Ken.W,

When you say that the drive suddenly stopped burning... What changed in your system, did you install, remove, or upgrade any software or hardware? Does the drive still burn in other software, like Nero or Windows Media Player?

I don't think the Acura software would interfere — it's usually other CD burning software that interferes with the CD burning functionality in iTunes.

Sometimes drives just go bad. They are mechanical devices. I had one of these drives that I pulled out to check your problem with and it's now not burning with any software. So, my version of this drive has gone south on me.

The only thing I know that changed is that I updated ITunes to v6 from a prior version. I used to burn back-up copies of all my purchased music from ITunes. I can't burn the most recent purchases (paul simon e.g.).

By the way, emachines claimes emphatically that there is no available update to the drive firmware. The link you sent only works for v1.08. v1.07 has been removed apparently.

Do you think simply installing a new drive would solve the problem? That is cheap enough that I'll just do it to make sure I can continue to burn backups.

I think the drive is fine. It works in all other ways.
