A2DP audio profile

Does anyone know if the Apple bluetooth stack supports A2DP for stereo bluetooth audio devices, as I am planning to purchase Plantronics Pulsar™ 590A Bluetooth® Headset?

Some BT headsets include a dongle in the range which provides the A2DP service it's worth checking if that applies to yours.

There are generic dongles available but check the BT sync password matches your headset eg. most BT devices use '0000' as a password some of the generic I've seen use '8888'. I've no idea if any would work with your headset so caveat emptor.

The Hardware is there, check the store for the BT spec on your rig. Unfortunately the A2DP protocol isn't included in the BT driver stack :-p. It's sort of like Apple gave us a top end car audio system when we bought a car from them, then forgot to include a power switch for it. So the answer to your question is "No, but it's wired for it". I appreciate their dedication in getting a new product line of crossover systems to market for less and developing a new OS, but let's not forget the current customers while charging toward that market share either. :-D

hey the guy who talked about the thread about the displacing ipod sales thingy, your absoloutly right.
Everyone, just take a look at the only two popular profiles that are not supported, the a2dp and the avrcp (audio video remote control profile) a pair of headphones equipped with sterio sound and a remote would totaly replace a lot of sales because you could just have you macbook in your backpack, or be sixty feet away from you home computer wearing just a pair of headphones that you could jsut hit a skip buttone to get to next song. for instance, take the plantronics 590a headset, great headset, on a pc you can bluetooth your skype, vonage etc.. and use the side remote (on the ear) to control your windows media player library, its great, itll also work on your phone running widows mobile to control your music libray and everything, now think what would happen to apple if the same were true for itunes?so if i had to bet i would say apple wont do anything soon about supporting these two profiles.

I think yes it may be a loss in ipod sales if Apple updates the support for A2DP on their computers, however what are they wanting to sell? more of the cheap ipods ($99-600 range) or more MacBooks/Pro's/iMacs? ($950-$4000 range)
I hope to see the A2DP support in the next BT driver update, because I want to use my new Motorola bluetooth head phones on my favorite Bluetooth device.
Sam.

Actually it's just like when Apple built a computer with an Ensoniq stereo sound synthesizer on the motherboard, then only hooked up one channel to the pins on the motherboard and on the back panel jack.

That's exactly what they did with the Apple IIgs.

Did you get the microphone to work alright? Which jack do you have the dongle plugged into?

The 590A works fine listening to iTunes with the dongle plugged into the output jack. The microphone is another story, however. Even in system prefs/sound, when I highlight the external microphone with the dongle plugged into the mic jack, I still get no recording levels. It's as if the headset is not "discovered" by bluetooth.

I Have the Plantronics Pulsar 590A headphone and I can pair them with my iBook G4 (osx 10.4.8) and they work ok, this is without the dongle.
The only thing is the sound is crap through iTunes but when watching a movie through Quicktime the sound is great. With the dongle connected to my iPod they work great.
On a side note when used with dongle on my TV there is a very slight delay in the sound, I can put up with it because I don't watch a lot of tv.
I've used them to make a skype call with no problem as well.
