Random linkbucks redirect issie...please help!

Hello,

I've got this strange redirect issie in all my web browsers, and think I may have a trojan or a virus. It's driving me mad, please somone help! I'm running OSX 10.6.8 with Firebox and Chrome.

When I click a link on random sites it redirects me to an irellevant URL + advertising: linkbucks.com... [followed by the adress of the intenended site]

This occures when leaving the page you are on (e.g. changing page on the site you are viewing). It happens on any site and appears to be compeltly random.

Is this a virus/trojan? If so, how can I get rid of it?

Thank you very much.

This is not malware of any kind. As to what it is, see:

It also redirects when I'm on my phone's 3G internet. So would it still be the router?

No. In that case, it's got to be the site(s) you're visiting. Either that or it's a massive domain name server compromise that's affecting both your cellular data provider and your home internet provider.

There's no known malware capable of infecting an iPhone that hasn't been jailbroken, and no malware at all capable of infecting both Windows 8 and a jailbroken iPhone. So it's not a malware issue.

Basically, there are only a few options here. Malware or adware is not one of those options in this case, because of the range of devices experiencing the problem.

1) It's the sites. Some sites are just crap, or have been hacked. Stop visiting those sites. If it's happening for every site you visit, this isn't the problem.

2) It's the network. The most common cause of a problem like this affecting many known-good sites is a hacked wireless router. Many routers are incorrectly configured or have known vulnerabilities, and there are botnets out there constantly scanning the internet for routers with such problems. Alternately, it could be an issue affecting the internet service provider (ISP), generally a compromised domain name server (DNS).

You say that it's not affecting all devices on your network and that it affects your phone when on the cellular data network. (You need to verify the latter by turning off wifi entirely and testing again.) This makes it sound like a DNS problem, where the problem may have been fixed by your ISP but some of your devices are still using cached DNS data. On the iOS devices that are affected, reset the network settings. (Go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.) This should clear the DNS cache. I don't know how to do this on Windows.

If following the instructions to reset the network on your iPhone fixed the problem, your wireless router isn't the problem. You need to figure out how to clear the DNS cache on any other affected devices... they're still using some compromised DNS data.

Here's a Google search that will give you some solutions for Windows 7, but I don't know which of those might be good solutions and which are not.
