Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

I have iMovie 11 and Mountain Lion OS. iMovie keeps quitting unexpectedly while creating videos but more annoyingly while I am trying to share them to YouTube. What can I do to stop this?

Any help you can offer would be much appreciated. As I have paid good money for both upgrading to Mountain Lion and for iMovie 11 this should not be happening anyway! Thanks guys!

iMovie '11, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

Trashing iMovie's preference file may help. It can become corrupted in some circumstances.

Follow these steps:

Ensure that iMovie is closed.

In Finder, go to the folder <your user name>/Library/Preferences (where <your user name> is your Home folder). For users on Lion (10.7) or Mountain Lion (10.8), the Home Library folder is hidden. To access it, in the Finder menu bar click on Go while holding down the Option key.

For iMovie '11, in the Preferences folder locate the file named "com.apple.iMovieApp.plist" and drag this file to the Trash. For versions prior to iMovie '11 (currently version 9.0.8) the preference file has a slightly different name. For example, for iMovie '09 the file is named "com.apple.iMovie8.plist".

Open iMovie - a new preference file will be created with the default settings (this happens in the background while iMovie is loading).

If iMovie now seems to be working OK, you can change the default preference settings as desired - click on iMovie's menu item "iMovie > Preferences" and make the desired changes for the relevant items in each of the tabs.

If iMovie is now working correctly, it's OK to empty the Trash. Otherwise, return the .plist file to it's original location in the Preferences folder. Post back if you need further help at that point, as I may be able to offer another fix.

Hi razzydoodle,

Instead of sharing to YouTube using the iMovie preset, export the movie using Share > Export Movie. Select an appropriate size (resolution) and choose your preferred location, such as Desktop. Now upload the movie using the uploader on the YouTube website. In YouTube you can navigate to your exported movie file, and will probably be able to publish a movie of greater length than that allowed by iMovie's built-in method (which I think is 15 minutes).

If this doesn't work, there may be a problem with your project - perhaps a corrupted clip. Another issue that can arise with iMovie is incompatible 3rd party plug-ins. The last 2 updates (9.0.7 and 9.0.8) did address this issue, but some have still reported the problem. If my suggestion to upload using the YouTube uploader doesn't fix things, please come back and I'll give you some more information about the plug-in problem and how to resolve it.

Mr. John, I have a problem too with my iMovie....Please help me...

Could you briefly explain the type of problem you have please. Otherwise it's difficult to suggest possible solutions.

In the meantime, have you tried trashing iMovie's preference file, as described in this thread? That usually fixes most issues with iMovie.
