Difference between Album, Smart Album & Folder?

I need some easy description of the difference between the above? I am confused on the functionality difference between them when you would use one over the other.

Can someone explain?

No. All folders and albums are virtual and maintained in the AlbumData.xml file. Only rolls get real folders created.

If you drag the Year folder into iPhoto the only rolls that will be created are those representing Events or any folder containing image files. Once the rolls are in iPhoto you'll have to create a Year folder in the Source pane and then add various months folders to that year folder. Then drag the rolls into the appropriate month folder.

Brad:

An album required you to manually select the photos to be assigned to it. A smart album can be given a set of criteria and will automatically add any photo that meets that criteria. A folder can contain albums, books, slideshows, calendars or other folders. Albums cannot contain other albums. Then can only contain photos. Here's an example of folders, sub folder and albums.

thanks for this. if I create a folder and move photos to it, is that album physically created within the Iphoto library? For example for years I have been saving photos in a folder tree like this:

YEAR>MONTH>EVENT

Now, that i started using Iphoto it doesn't allow me to import photos to follow my long used naming schemes but creates ROLLS which are folders in the Originals FOLDER. If once imported I created the above would it work?
