Macbook Pro Retina eats memory - up to 10-15gb disappears

Help me figure out if I have a faulty Macbook pro Retina or if it's normal?
I swear this computer just eats memory like crazy to store some system files. Within a few hours of working - I get an error message saying my memory is dangerously low. It can go to 400mb from 12gb in a few hours of just idling. Granted, some software (browsers, etc) might be open... But it should still not do this I don't think? On restart all memory is restored.

See screen shot for my mac specs.

GUYSS, for the longest time my computer kept telling me that my start up disk was full, steadily freezing and shutting down. forcing me to one by one delete old, precious files. i just downloaded omni desk sweep https://www.omnigroup.com/more and followed the problem back to its source. turns out my apple Mail application was storing duplicates of all my emails. OVER 10000 at average 35 mb each. previously i had 298mb free out of a 498 gb harddrive. I deleted all those files and regained 390 GB of space!!!
