How do you record your iPhone's screen?

I would like to be able to record my iPhone's screen (for demos and stuff like that). However, there are some limitations:

1. No jailbreak—I am not jailbroken and am completely uninterested in becoming so.

2. $0 to spend—the solution must be free.

3. Nothing crazily complicated—though I am capable of doing advanced things with computers, if I mess up our computer it would not be good.

4. Downloads must be safe and minimal—in our house we are very worried about privacy and hackers so there should really only be one download involved. Also, my iPhone is only 16GB, so the download can't be too big. Also, this is my main and only phone and our main and only computer we are talking about. This can't be one of those things where they say "oh, it might crash your phone." This has to be a tried, working, safe and reliable solution.

I know it's a tough question, but I'm hoping someone somewhere will have an answer.

Thanks! :)

You can use Quick time to do this... Open Quicktime, choose new movie recording, a new quicktime window will open to the right of the red dot, is an arrow, click it and select iPhone... then click the red dot to begin recording... everything you do on your iPhone should display on the screen and record...

If your phone can update to IOS 8 or above and you have a Mac running OS X Yosemite or above you can use this easy solution with no download necessary

  1. Connect your phone to your computer via the charging cable
  2. open QuickTime (does not have to be pro edition)
  3. a window will pop up ignore it
  4. go to file > new movie recording
  5. another window will pop up with you in it
  6. at the bottom of that window where the record button is there is a small arrow
  7. click that arrow and change the check box from Built-In-Camera to your phone
  8. click record and your ready to go!
  9. to stop the recording click the stop button at the top of your mac in the bar.

I hope this helps you!

It's now 2016 and if anyone is still out there looking for the solution, Reflector 2 by AirSquirrels worked for me.

I tried before I bought, since the software allows users to do that.

Installed to a 5-year old tablet (-- see list of equipment tested below). After installation, launch Reflector 2 on your PC before going to your phone or iPad.

Click AirPlay and your PC will appear on the list. That's it. No need to also buy an app for the iPhone if all you want is to project to the PC and record whatever is happening on your iOS device screen.

Worked perfectly, and I was smiling all the way to the checkout, glad to know someone solved this problem for the price of a few coffees.

Oh and one extra special touch: the correct device frame was automatically added to the video. That would have been either a horrible battle to do it with CSS or have to pay lots of money to have a commercial service frame it for you.

That's all for this field report.

I had the exact same problem and I know how to do it on a mac if this helps at all. On a Mac, there's an app called QuickTime Player and there might be one like that on a Sony which allows you to record your computer screen if you open the application and then go to the toolbar, select 'File' and click 'New Screen Recording'. If you want to record your iPhone screen, get your lightning cable and attach your phone to your computer. Go to QuickTime Player and select 'New Movie Recording'. A clip of you should appear but next to the record button should be an arrow facing down and if you click on that, your iPhone name (like mine is called Edith's iPhone) should appear. Click on that and then a recording of your phone should be there. Hope this helps!

If you have a mac,

you can plug it in via your charging cable open quick time and do a movie recording.

You'll need to go the red button to start it, get the drop down menu and select your iPhone.

If you want audio do the same too.

I believe it does give a different battery life and time to what your phone it at.

Hope this helps:)

  • Connect your iPhone to your Mac via a Lightning Cable
  • Open QuickTime on your Mac, and select File > New Movie Recording
  • A recording window will appear. Click the arrow next to the Record button, and select your iPhone from the dropdown menu that appears
  • Click the Record button and go about your business on your iPhone
  • Once you're done, click the Stop button and save the video 🙂
