Volume down button doesn't work on iPhone 5

Lower (-) button does not work. Raising (+) button does but lower does not. I have rebooted using sleep and home button until apple logo appears twice with out success. Software is current and I don't have other devices. Any ideas other than resetting everything?

iPhone 5, iOS 6.1.2

I have the same issue. AppleCare tried telling me that I have malware on my phone.. seems that most blogs agree that it must be a HW problem and not a virus... Should I send it in and get back someone elses refurbished phone? hmmm. if I buy a new car that doesnt work do I expect to get back a used one that smells like cigarettes when i dont smoke? We should all demand our money back and send our phones back in.. if a thousand people stood together Apple would become very concenrd. The people of the world today need to unite, otherwise we all suffer when it comes to getting ripped off by large coorperations.

The only way to have malware is by hacking/jailbreaking the iPhone. Unless you hacked the iPhone, you don't have malware or a virus primarily because there are none wiuth a non-hacked/jailbroken iPhone.

No, and you won't receive an iPhone exchange under warranty that smells like cigarettes or anything else.

An exchange under warranty will be a new or refurbished iPhone with no way to tell the difference. A refurbished iPhone includes a new battery and casing and remains under the same warranty as the original purchase. If an iPhone is exchanged under warranty within 90 days of the warranty expiration date, the exchange includes a 90 day warranty.

The iPhone you have is no longer new. It is used.

If covered under warranty and you want it repaired, send it in.

Yes, quit right.

There's no way that anything malicious can happen to your device, its really likely that if you did get a virus, it would be from a jailbreak.

And due to the fact, that everyone has 6.1.3/4, there is no official jailbreak for that software, however people are saying there is a jailbreak, but what they are really doing is showing people a fake jailbreak, that is likely to mess your device up.

Plus I think its a bit stupid, for a virus that stops a button working

I took your advice and sent it in, I got back a refurbished phone and it also came with issues. Now the phone freezes up and the touch screen fails.. I've tried all the resets and software protocols and it seems to be getting worse. They said it was tested and for that reason should be working better than factory. I just sent in the second phone and am waiting now for a 3rd phone.. when I bought this phone it was new! Not used! so yes I expect a 'new' phone that works the way it is being advertise to work. If the 3rd phone has issues I will return it and request a refund and try android for a change. this is rediculous!

How do you know the exchange is or was refurbished?

When you bought the iPhone it was new and when a hardware component failed, it was no longer new.

You will get no refund, but you can sell it and use the proceeds to purchase an android device. Be sure to use antivirus with that grossly insecure mobile OS.

None of the funky tricks are working for me. I called a local uBreakiFix phone repair shop as I'm out of warrenty and they want a hundred bucks to fix it. I may get my girlfriends daughter to take it into an Apple store and see if she can talk them into fixing it. More than once they've gone in with iPhone issues out of warrenty and they fix 'em no problem. If I go in (I'm an ugly dude) they just laugh at me and point fingers...

My phone had a slight bend down the button side, probably from sitting on it in my back pocket occasionally. The aluminum frame gets very thing where the buttons are and had a kink. Aluminum does not have much spring to it so one it's bent it holds. Look down the edge like you are looking for the straightness of a board to see if that is your issue. I gave mine a non recommended bend back to the phone and straightened the edge back out. Now both buttons work perfect again. They were binding because of the bend.

I also had the broken down volume button problem on my iPhone 5. Per the suggestion here, I applied pressure to the front top right corner while holding the phone and I was able to operate the down volume button.

I went to the Apple store for a more permanent fix, but was 3 weeks outside my warranty and was told it would be $200+ to fix. Or they suggested using the Assistive Touch floating button, but that is not very user friendly and I definitely did not want to spend that much to fix it.

I could see no noticeable bend in my iPhone 5 but figured since it works when the top right corner is "bent back" that the phone must have a little bend in it which is messing with the button sensor. So I built a little "jig" to put my iPhone in overnight to slowly / slightly bend it backward. I put a thin piece of foam under the center of the iphone and then clamped it down on both ends to slightly bend it. I was worried about cracking the screen, so did this very gently. Here is a photo of what it looks like clamped down. Note: it would be better to have something "wider" to clamp down on the iPhone as the small surface area of the clamp could damage the screen. I later usec a small, flat piece of wood to spread out the pressure from the clamp.

I made sure when it was clamped down that I found the proper position to clamp the top of the iPhone so the down button was working. After sitting in this overnight, I took it out and the down volume button works fine. I kept it in this overnight for a few days just to be sure it did not slowly move back out of alignment. I've been using it for over a week now and it continues to work fine.

I am not keeping it in my pocket as much and am more aware when I am doing things that might "bend it" if in my pocket.

Anyway, just sharing a more permanent fix I found. I'm still disappointed that something as simple as the down volume button failed after a year and was held strictly to the warranty period. The down button had begun to work sporadically a couple months prior. Lesson learned... if anything is wrong with one of my Apple products no matter how minor, I willl be bringing it in to be fixed / replaced ASAP.

Hi everyone.

I have the same problem.

First, I had to push very quickly the button several times, then the volume could be minimized.

But a few period later, nothing at all, even if I press continuously on the button.

I even took my protection out; nothing.

Normally where I live (Belgium) I still have warranty. One year just ended, but here we have 2 years.

I hope this wil be solved using the waranty?

I tried to fill in my serial number on the support page, but it says that support has ended, and if I thing this is wrong, I have to contact them.

So it will be for another day... .

I've had the same issue with my iPhone 5 but my volume up button has also recently not worked. Inspired from the pressure method posted earlier, I've found that squeezing the top of the phone inward enables me to volume up or down, but I still need to do this each time (apologies if this has already been mentioned). Holding the phone in my right hand, I place my left thumb immediately above the silencer/ringer switch and my left index finger in the upper right corner and squeeze inward. At times, I'll need to squeeze real hard. Hope this helps some of you.
