Volume down button doesn't work on iPhone 5

Lower (-) button does not work. Raising (+) button does but lower does not. I have rebooted using sleep and home button until apple logo appears twice with out success. Software is current and I don't have other devices. Any ideas other than resetting everything?

Pushing pressure on the upper right side has worked for a while but now no tricks seem to help anymore 😠

I activated the asistive touch as final solution. It's a way out but not very convenient to quickly lower volume.

I'll have to bring it in into a service center.

Someone any experience if you get a spare iphone whilst in repair; can't afford to be out of phone reach ... 😕

I have the same issue. AppleCare tried telling me that I have malware on my phone.. seems that most blogs agree that it must be a HW problem and not a virus... Should I send it in and get back someone elses refurbished phone? hmmm. if I buy a new car that doesnt work do I expect to get back a used one that smells like cigarettes when i dont smoke? We should all demand our money back and send our phones back in.. if a thousand people stood together Apple would become very concenrd. The people of the world today need to unite, otherwise we all suffer when it comes to getting ripped off by large coorperations.

The only way to have malware is by hacking/jailbreaking the iPhone. Unless you hacked the iPhone, you don't have malware or a virus primarily because there are none wiuth a non-hacked/jailbroken iPhone.

No, and you won't receive an iPhone exchange under warranty that smells like cigarettes or anything else.

An exchange under warranty will be a new or refurbished iPhone with no way to tell the difference. A refurbished iPhone includes a new battery and casing and remains under the same warranty as the original purchase. If an iPhone is exchanged under warranty within 90 days of the warranty expiration date, the exchange includes a 90 day warranty.

The iPhone you have is no longer new. It is used.

If covered under warranty and you want it repaired, send it in.

Yes, quit right.

There's no way that anything malicious can happen to your device, its really likely that if you did get a virus, it would be from a jailbreak.

And due to the fact, that everyone has 6.1.3/4, there is no official jailbreak for that software, however people are saying there is a jailbreak, but what they are really doing is showing people a fake jailbreak, that is likely to mess your device up.

Plus I think its a bit stupid, for a virus that stops a button working

Strangely enough, I have the same problem. My solution is a bit odd but i found it works.

1. Grab bottom of iphone with left hand firmly (with thumb over front of area to left of home button.

2. Hold the Down button with something like music open.

3. Top right corner... apply gentle pressure, pushing back wards and have index finger in middle of back of phone.

So you will seem to be bending the phone VERY gently until the button responds. Actually is more like you twisting the phone - User uploaded file

To be honest... you should take it back but it seems that the case itself is bent and touching something that it shouldn't be cause the button not to work

I took your advice and sent it in, I got back a refurbished phone and it also came with issues. Now the phone freezes up and the touch screen fails.. I've tried all the resets and software protocols and it seems to be getting worse. They said it was tested and for that reason should be working better than factory. I just sent in the second phone and am waiting now for a 3rd phone.. when I bought this phone it was new! Not used! so yes I expect a 'new' phone that works the way it is being advertise to work. If the 3rd phone has issues I will return it and request a refund and try android for a change. this is rediculous!

How do you know the exchange is or was refurbished?

When you bought the iPhone it was new and when a hardware component failed, it was no longer new.

You will get no refund, but you can sell it and use the proceeds to purchase an android device. Be sure to use antivirus with that grossly insecure mobile OS.

I had the same issue and nothing seemed to work for me.

Frustrated I turned on assistive touch and decided to operate the unit this way until going for a warranty claim.

While using the assistive touch, I started testing the down "screen" button... then pressed the physical button just for notice that IT JUST STARTED TO WORK AGAIN!.... perhaps it’s really a software bug that got solved while making the virtual button pressing... just guessing.

Well software issues I can understand but hardware? The guy on the phone told me it would be refurbished thats how I know and I am now expecting my 4th iPhone5.. this time the lock screen doesnt work while on a call.. when I pull the phone away from my head it locks.. its backwards.. really?? c'mon apple I have never seen a single product with so many hardware issues.
