The Denon won't pass through the video to the TV. I connected the HDMI directly to the TV and the optical out to the Denon, but the audio won't come through (apparently optical audio can only come from the TV). Any suggestions?

Hi MK,
You need to assign your digital connection to your input source in the setup menu of your AVR (input assign).
As you have more sources then digital connections, you must tell the AVR what to use.

I run my optical to my sony reciever
I choose the optical as audio source on the reciever it calls that BD (blueray disc) or SAT (sat box) depending on which optical in ports I use
Thanks, Rudegar, same set up here, but the Denon won't seem to accept the optical in unless it's from...the TV! It's a very powerful AVR, but has some distinctly user unfriendly tendencies. Funny thing, I have a Sony and could easily set it up to do that. Thinking of just getting rid of the Denon, in spite of its superior sound. Was hoping someone has had the same problem, so to speak.
