iweb on the fritz

I have been using iWeb to make my website and Yahoo to host.

Tonight they stopped communicating, and I think the problem may be on the iweb side.

iweb no longer opens and says: Can't open file "~/Library/Application Support/iWeb/Domain.sites2."

I have an a 2008 27iMac that has an functional iWeb. I think my options might be:

a) copy iWeb onto a memory stick and load it onto this computer (I am no tekkie, I do not know if applications can be transferred like that)

b) download iWeb (from a third party, I presume) off the internet.

Any help please?

It still amazes me that you couldn't find it.

You mentioned it in your first post :

~/Library/Application Support/iWeb/Domain.sites2

BTW, the ~ is UNIX speak for Home Directory.

You get there by this wonderful command from the Go menu (Yes the same one) :

Command-Shift-G

Then paste the line :

~/Library/Application Support/iWeb/

Hit Return.

Voilà. Pure Magic.

NOTE: In Lion and Mountain Lion the Home/Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.

Once the library is made visible (or use Wyodor's method) you'll have no problem finding the iWeb folder.

You guys are so kind and patient, thanks so much.

1. I have the latest version of OS 10.8.3. 27 inch. 2009.

2. When I could not find the iWeb domain on my computer, which has my website in full, I dropped and dragged my old, partial website from my old Mac, 24 inch, 2007.

3. Now, when I open iWeb, I get my old, partial website, which is totally inadequate.

4. So, I went searching in my time machine backup (which I time-machined once or twice, and then I turned off to use as a backup disc).

5. I reason that if I can find my website domain on my external backup disc, I could open my new, full website again. Bah dah bing!

6. But, I cannot find the iweb on my backup disc.

7. I can now easily find it, thanks to you kind folks, on my computer, though.

Any ideas on how to find it on the external backup?

Thanks.

Download and use Find Any File to search for Domain.sites on your Time Machine hard drive. FAF can search areas that Spotlight can't, invisible folders, packages, etc. The search will take some time and if there is a Domain.sites file in the TM backup the search results will look like this:

User uploaded file

If you find it you can drag it to your Desktop from the search window.

In Lion and Mountain Lion the Home/Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.

To open your domain file in Lion or Mountain Lion or to switch between multiple domain files Cyclosaurus has provided us with the following script that you can make into an Applescript application with Script Editor. Open Script Editor, copy and paste the script below into Script Editor's window and save as an application.

do shell script "/usr/bin/defaults write com.apple.iWeb iWebDefaultsDocumentPath -boolean no"

delay 1

tell application "iWeb" to activate

You can download an already compiled version with this link: iWeb Switch Domain.

Just launch the application, find and select the domain file in your Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder that you want to open and it will open with iWeb. It modifies the iWeb preference file each time it's launched so one can switch between domain files.

WARNING: iWeb Switch Domain will overwrite an existing Domain.sites2 file if you select to create a new domain in the same folder. So rename your domain files once they've been created to something other than the default name.
