For those still looking into this. Decipher Voicemail and iExplorer cost money, but do work.
This is the only way I managed to transfer my voicemails for FREE without re-recording them. You do not have to be tech savvy, the instructions are clear. http://www.howtogeek.com/141164/how-to-backup-iphone-voicemails-to-mp3/
I feel as though reposting the same information is kind of like casting a vote, so here it goes...
My 4s was damaged to the point where I couldn't use it anymore. I was able to back up on iTunes. The problem was I also needed to switch service providers and was about to lose all my voicemails. I used a friend's iPhone to call my number before the switch.
I plugged my friends iPhone from the headphone jack into the input jack on my mac and and started a recording using garageband. I then called my old phone number, and was able to access my voicemail using the # sign. I was able to record my old voicemails with perfect fidelity. Garageband allowed me to adjust levels so the message had less static. I suppose you could tap your own phone this way too. It isn't elegant, and automatically save all the information about the incoming calls but it worked for me. I almost spent a good chunk of change to have a company do probably a very similar process.
