Windows 8 and iTunes cannot detect iPhone

Hi, I am using Windows 8 and iPhone 4S. Recently both Windows and iTunes cannot detect my iPhone. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the latest iTunes and related software, but no use. I tried follow this article http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1538 , but in doing the step "If the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver is not listed", replugging the device, I still can't find Apple iPhone in Device Manager.

No Universal Serial Bus Controller found.

I concur that that seems to be the basis of the issue (although I'm not entirely sure what precisely would cause that on a PC).

Perhaps head first to your drivers and downloads page at HP (for your country) and check to see if there are any BIOS and/or chipset driver updates available for your particular HP model.

B noir,

What essentially would cause iPhones being recognized differently in recovery and without recovery mode. I had different situations, like recognized in recovery and not as regular phone and opposite. I understand about phone having firmware only and having OS loaded, but what part makes that difference for Windows. I d appreciate if you could recommend some reading on that, I d like to organize it inside of my head. Kind of like build a table what to look for.

I have brought my iPhone to an Apple Premium Reseller and used my cable to plug my iPhone into a MacBook Pro in the store, but the iTunes there didn't detect it. I plugged an iPad in the store using my cable to a power outlet, and the battery bar did show. When I plugged the iPad to the same MacBook Pro with my cable, it did get detected in iTunes.

So it is confirmed my iPhone issue.

I don't think I'm the best authority on that, fromsouth. I'd check in with one of the regulars here (to see who's currently the authority or authorities at the iPhone communities), or possibly check in with lllaass over at iPod Touch. They'll almost certainly be much more state-of-the-art on those particular topics.

k, thanks. appreciate the modesty. I think it is more about Windows, then anything. Cheers.

i stumbled upon the same issue today, an iphone 4s connected to windows 8 - 64 bit operating system, i am sitting in my office and my phone is connected to my laptop and suddenly i get an pop up saying the usb device is not recognised. The phone isn't charging, nor detected in itunes, drilling down to the cause i found out that an windows update had screwed all the usb drivers. To resolve the issue download "Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer" and run it, it will detect all the misconfigured updates and prompt you to download the correct updates, once you download the updates install them on your computer, shutdown your system completely and wait for a few seconds, boot it up and that should resolve your issue.

I am not sure if this helps anyone with the problem of Windows not detecting your iPhone. In my case, running Windows 7 and the Apple Mobile Driver showed in devices but the iPhone did not display as a device or in windows explorer. The computer has 1 USB 2.0 port and 2 USB 3.0 ports. The 2 USB 3.0 ports detected the iphone and only worked with iTunes, The USB 2.0 port was able to detect the device and show in Windows Explorer and also in Control -Panel-Devices. I rebooted the iPhone and also did get the popup to trust the computer. Hope this helps. (Was unable to update the device driver for the Mobile Device driver because it was already up to date).
