how is WebDAV different, if so, from icloud?

That is the first time you have given us anything we can work on.

I don't know what position you are seeking but I went with Academic, created an account, logged in and went to Upload Documents.

On a desktop Mac you can browse to your files on your hard drive, no problem.

In iOS it does take you to your Photos, but you have a series of choices for file formats some which may be compatible. How you get those into Photos is a separate question for another forum.

Also the question then becomes if you insist on doing this on an iPad how do you have it link to other than Photos.

If you take the actual problem to an Apple Store they may be able to provide you with an answer. One of the file formats is psd (Photoshop), also pdf which maybe able to be added to a Camera roll.

Just don't make them drag the information out of you.

Probably the best solution is to just use a desktop PC or Mac to submit.

I've not used WebDAV myself, just like I don't normally use FTP and other channels for exchanging files in commercial settings, so I can't explain it to you with any confidence. I gather that the WebDAV protocol has special provisions for managing versions of documents to keep track of who did what and when.

WebDAV has nothing to do with this that I can see.

It is the internal maccinations of iOS that are causing the problem. Also that the site presumes a desktop to browse to, which doesn't exist in iOS.

UCMerced should offer an alternative submission method via email. The plethora of oddball formats for attachments means the submissions are probably printed out at some point anyway. The site's php is just a method of tracking this all in their database.

Irene, I didn't go to the website that you listed, but I had a similar problem with uploading a file a little while ago. There are maybe two options. One would be to open a free dropbox account & store the file in there. (Once it's set up & you have the app on your ipad, then from pages, you export the doc (or open in another app) & select dropbox as the app. It will upload there. Then you MAY be able to upload the resume to the employer from your ipad, through dropbox. That MIGHT work. In my case, it didn't.

I had to email the document to myself & then open it up on a computer & upolad it to the site from the computer. The problem is that the ipad doesn't have a file system (at least not one that end users can see) so the website doens't know where to look for the resume because it doesn't look like it's stored anywhere.

I've been looking around for more information on WebDAV and found this Knowledge Base article on using WebDav to upload a file: Pages for iOS (iPhone, iPod touch): Share documents using a WebDAV server

When you go to where the website asks you to submit your resumè, you are presented with Login registration option, which Peter said he was able to complete. The web address of this webpage, the Username you choose and the Password you create are what your iPad needs to addess the WebDav server and transfer the file. If I read you correctly, you haven't gotten that far yet, but when you do, here's what the article link I gave you above says to do:

If you have access to a WebDAV server, you can copy your Pages documents directly to the server in Pages ’09, Microsoft Word, or PDF file format, or from the server in Pages ‘09, Microsoft Word, or plain text (.txt) file formats.

Before you can transfer files using a WebDAV server, you must first set it up to be accessible in Pages.

Set up your WebDAV server in Pages:

1. In Documents view (with all documents closed), tap .
2. Tap WebDAV, and then type the server address (web address or URL), your user name, and password into the appropriate fields.
3. Tap Sign In in the upper-right corner of the window.

After you’ve signed in to your WebDAV server, you can copy files to or from the server without signing in again (see the instructions below for details). You remain signed in to the server you set up until you tap Sign Out in the upper-right corner of this same window.If you want to sign in to a different WebDAV server, you must first sign out of the current server and set up another one.

Copy a document to your WebDAV server:

1. Open the document you want to upload to the server, and then tap in the toolbar.
2. Tap “Share and Print,” and then tap “Copy to WebDAV.”If your WebDAV server isn’t already set up in Pages, provide the appropriate information and sign in, as described in the instructions for setting up, above.
3. Tap the document format you want to export to: Pages, PDF, or Microsoft Word.
4. In the list of folders, tap the one in which you want to save the document.
5. Tap Copy in the upper-right corner of the window.
