Uneven Backlight Fixes Itself?

Okay, when I first fired up my MBP the screen looked horrendously lumpy! The backlight was incredibly uneven, with shadows all over the place.

After three days of using it, the lumpiness has all but disappeared, and the screen seems fairly even bar a slightly darker strip about third of the way up the screen.

I still have a bright 1/2inch strip at the bottom (which I believe is light spillage from the backlight tube), which is a bit annoying but not worth sending the machine back for in itself.

So (not that I'm complaining) can anyone explain why the uneveness of the backlight would improve?

Well i got my macbook pro swapped today, and guess what!! This one has problems too. I checked the laptop out while at apple store and it seemed fine, but the more i use it, the difference in the backlight becomes quite evident. !

Im sick and tired of swapping laptops, and the people at the apple store probably know me by my first name..!!
is this problem universal problem, or is it just me!! Any ideas as to what i should do?????

Thanks
ps. Does anyone here know if apple installs third party ram for free at their stores??? i was told today that they charge £40 for this..! User uploaded file

Uneven brightness is normal for a laptop.

Its not just for the MBP, most notebooks are plagued from light leakage and all have some sort of spatial uniformity problems. Check out tomshardware.com to see how uneven some LCDs really are.

I agree that the display is uneven, but don't so unrealistic as to expect to get one that is perfectly even. It won't happen - especially in a laptop!

BTW, installing RAM is a piece of cake, don't bother spending the money; it really is a cakewalk.

Yeah, I've got to get mine swapped out too. It's fairly even over most of the screen now, but there's a "shadow" across the width of the screen about 1/3rd of the way up and below that it's just too bright.

Also the power button is wonky, the screen scrapes against the back of the machine on one side when I open and close it, and the heat coming off this thing is nuts (it's hot enough to burn).

Trouble is, it's a three hour round trip to an Apple store (Bull Ring is my closest), and I have a heap of work that I should be doing... So it's a two day turnaround (it's lucky I still have my G5) while it gets picked up and a new one sent out.

You think it's going to be fun to have a new computer, but it always turns out to be a headache!

I've had 4 laptops over the last 4 years.

All have been what I concider even for the brightness. No light leak on the bottom or top, or dark spots.

My friends PC based laptops (although less cost) all have spillage and dark spots. Just sayin'

All i say, with the exception of the MBP I just purchased today. =( Light leaks at the bottom, and dark spots in the middle.
I will wait and see if it improves.

Hi
There was a big problem with the 15" PB and uneven illumination, check out the 15" display discussions you will find a very big thread to do with uneven illumination. I had my display changed due to it by Apple under warranty.
It is still OK, so far, it can be a little uneven when turning on from cold but as it heats up all the unevenness goes away.
When they replaced the screen they also replaced the inverter, the battery connector and a wiring harness.

I think the best way to see where you get light leakage is to take pictures of it with your digital camera, or look at the view area of the camera. It sure reveals a lot spots and leaks.

But that is another story. I think its not so much that it improves, I think its your eyes playing tricks on you. Maybe there is improvement but, for the most part its just your eyes. Also hold the scree up to a mirror and you'll be able to see more lighting problems. It's really weird how when you look at it from a different perspective it looks different.

I don't know thats just my 2 cents. I have gone through swapping 10 MBP and I've settled with the most recent one. Its not perfect by any means. The battery feels loose but I'm willing to forgo that for a decent screen. Which this one is quite good compared to some other ones I had.
