iPhoto books from pdf only?

I don't understand your response. The instructions said I have to save the old iPhoto AND the old themes folder and put the old themes folder in the Applications Support/iPhoto/ folder.

I'm trying to save books from an iPhoto library that wouldn't upgrade. Hopefully the iPhoto libraries with only one book will upgrade, but the instructions said the new version didn't have the themes from the old version.

If my saved iPhoto (book) Libraries fail to upgrade to the new version, can I just launch my old iPhoto from my HD or a CD and choose one of the "book" Libraries I've saved? The last time I tried to upgrade, my Library failed to upgrade. The Apple Store gurus tried everything they could think of but were not successful. That's why I'm following your procedure to save a pared down version of the Library for just a single book.

Well, my computer only has iPhoto 8.1.2 installed. I desperately need to preserve my books and the complete Library would not upgrade. So I'm reluctant to install the upgrade till I am certain I can continue to order books using the archived Libraries with 8.1.2 OR that the book libraries will successfully upgrade. I can take a CD to my daughter and try it on her computer with the latest iPhoto version. If the archived Libraries won't upgrade, I'll try launching 8.1.2 from the CD.

I presume you recommended saving the old iPhoto version so it could be used if necessary. If that's true, how would you run the older version?

Yes, my existing library works with all my books. I have made a separate copy for each book and pared each down to contain just the pictures necessary for that book. I also deleted folders in the library contents with dates (years) other than what is needed for the books. (If I knew what other files I could safely delete from the library contents, I'd do that too.) These book libraries all work. I hope to try one on iPhoto 11 tonight. I'm hoping the "corruption" got deleted along with the unneeded pictures, albums, etc.

Prior to doing this, I exported all my photos in order to preserve my "description" data. If these "book" libraries work with iPhoto 11, I'll reconstruct my entire library from photos I exported. I realize the reconstructed library won't have the books, but that's where the individual book libraries come in.

If EVERYTHING works, I might purchase iPhoto Library Manager and try to recombine my libraries then split them in a more logical way than one library for each book.

That's exactly the procedure I've been following. That's where I got the instruction to save the themes folder and a copy of the "previous version" before upgrading. But should the saved libraries not work with iPhoto 11, I'm still not sure how to use the "previous version" of iPhoto that I saved.

I'm presuming I only need to copy it to the Applications folder and launch it when needed and select the appropriate library.

So I made duplicates of my iPhoto library and eliminated everything except pictures related to a single photo book. I even checked the iPhoto Library contents for pictures not related to my book and eliminated them. My book and my Library indicate I have 109 pictures and everything works. I made a copy of that library and tried to upgrade it to iPhoto '11. I got no errors during the process, but all the pictures and the book came up blank! I use the "recover orphaned pictures" option and all the pictures get reclaimed. But the book still shows blank.

I tried the "recover orphaned pictures" option on the original library and it found 276 photos. The pictures were all duplicates of the existing pictures plus "faces".

What is goin on here? If the Library, including the book, works with my iPhoto '09, where are these so-called "orphaned photos" coming from?

For kicks, I made a copy of my entire iPhoto Library and tried the "recover orphaned photos" option. It found over 4000 "orphaned" photos! As with the smaller library, all the so-called orphans are duplicates of pictures that work just fine in the library. I have no idea what's going on. 😕

I opened iPhoto, went to Events, and deleted those events that weren't relataed to the book. I just dragged the events to the trash. Of the remaining events, mot all the photos were in the book, so I used your technique of adding a Keyword "book" to all the photos in the book. I then created a smart album and added all the photos that did NOT contain the keyword "book." I then deleted all the photos that were in the smart album by dragging them to the trash. The only photos remaining in the library were those that were in the book, 109 photos to be exact.
