Is the Hitachi Travelstar 5K1000 suitable for a MBP 5,3?

I have two of those HGST HDDs in my MBPs and they work just fine. I see no reason why you should have any problems with them.

I have three of the HGST Travelstar 7K1000's - got two from OWC. Although your machine wouldn't use SATA III speeds, it would certainly benefit from the 7200rpm boost.

Personally, I'd go with the 7K1000.

Clinton, greetings; I blew that. I missed that the OP link was for the 5400 rpm 1 TB HDD. I too have the 7200 rpm HGST 1 TB HDDs installed. I do have several 5400 rpm HGST 1 TB HDDs in enclosures. Even so, the recommendation remains the same.

I have installed them in my 2010 and late 2011 MBPs and both are in the 'main' location. I have no need for replacing the optical drive.

Ogelthorpe, did you have any trouble installing the 7K1000 in your late 2011 MBP??? I have the same MBP and I purchased a 7K1000 3 weeks ago; and after (GUID) partitioning the drive in Disk Utility I tried to "Verify Disk" and it came up with an error and said I must "Repair Disk". I tried repairing and got another error that said it couldn't be repaired. I sent the HDD back and then purchase another one from a different vendor and the same exact errors occurred. Should I be doing something different?

I have installed the HGST 7K1000 HDDs in both of my MBPs (2010 and late 2011). This is my installation proceedure:

In an external enclosure, I format them via Disk Utlity>Erase to Mac OS Extended (Journaled).

Then via Disk Utility>Restore I copy the data from the internal HDD to the HGST 7K1000.

Then I power the MBP holding the OPTION key, select the HGST 7K1000 and test it to see if it will boot the MBP.

Then I performed the physical swap.

Both HDDs in both MBPs are performing satisfactorily with no problems.

Thanks for your reply Ogelthorpe. By all accounts and tutorials I have read (CCC website) and watched (youtube), your prodecure seemed to have worked for most. It didn't for my MBP, but I stumbled upon the solution this morning.

Instead of enclosing the new HDD (usb), formatting it, and then cloning the original drive - I physically installed the new HDD to the MBP, then enclosed the original HDD (usb), booted up holding OPTION, and used the original to boot up. Then I was able to partition (GUID), verify disk, and begin my clone (CCC) without errors.

Why it was important to do it this way is to clone the recovery partition from the original drive. Because the new HDD (7K1000) could not be verified, CCC was not able to clone the recovery partition before cloning the drive. Physically installing the 7K1000 allowed Disk Utility to verify it, clone the recovery, and clone the HDD without any errors!!! It all worked out.
