I have never received a reroute notification, has anyone? If you have, can it be received while navigating with the screen locked? I like to keep the screen locked to save battery life.

Maps provides traffic information, but doesn't re-route bases on trafffic. Only if you make a turn or otherwise alter the route you are taking. That will occur even if the screen is locked.
If you want traffic rerouting check out Waze
I agree. Apple maps uses Waze traffic data. Waze shows much more information than apple maps does and is free.
If what you say is true, why does Apple's website say this?:
Traffic
... And if traffic’s a mess, Maps offers alternative routes to save you time.

I stand corrected. The question is what is the trigger for a re-route alert.
I have never received a reroute either. Perhaps I'm always on the best/fastest route even in traffic.
Not sure either. Even giant traffic jams ahead don't trigger for a re-route 😟
Will Apple Maps reroute me around traffic if the screen is locked?
