Upgrade to 3.4.3 Problems--huge change in image appearance

Hi all,

I've just upgraded to Aperture 3.4.3 from 2.1.4 and I'm having some big issues. On some of my images, the adjustments seem totally changed. For instance, on several images, the contrast has been reset to 1.0 (all the way to the right). Other images the exposure and color balance seems different or lost. The change isn't universal, either. The image just before and just after may appear correct, but the image in between is corrupted. My typical work process is to get one image right and lift and stamp adjustments in a series, so all of the adjustments originally should have been the same. Sometimes the thumbnail looks okay, then when I click on it, the image gets corrupted. Odd series of issues.

Also, I noticed that each image was processed with a previous processor and Aperture asks to reprocess. When I do, the image looks much worse than it did before. All the images are taken with in Raw .nef format, with a D100, D200, and D300, but mostly seems to impact the earlier models.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks,

Steve

Interesting. They posted it 4 months after I last checked the status with them. For me, it wasn't just the Contrast that was reset, the Saturation and Vibrancy changed as well. If I recall correctly, the Vibrancy would be reset to zero with the saturation being set to the old Vibrancy. Not good for skin tones.

Also, not thrilled with the new RAW Processing--darkens both D200 and D300 images well beyond what's on the camera's panel. On import, I'll apply a blanket change to every image that ups the exposure and shadows to compensate. Cumbersome, but works well enough for most of my needs (settings: up about .5 stops exposure, 20% shadows, levels black up .02, saturation 1.03, vibrancy +.17, the last two as most of my images these days are kids.).

Really have found the skin tone white balance really helpful, though.

After 4 years, I have finally found a solution to this problem that works, even if it's a workaround. After re-installing Aperture 2.1.4, I exported all my old projects individually from my Aperture 2 library backup, adding "New" after the project name. I then imported the projects individually into my main Aperture 3 library. And since the project name was different, it added a full new copy of the project instead of merging. This time, everything came over perfectly! No more dark contrast images. So there definitely appears to be a difference between importing individual projects and upgrading a full library. I then deleted the old projects and now I' back to normal!! :-) Phew, this saved me many long hours of work.

Steve, it would be interesting to see if the same process would work for you. But perhaps you have already re-done all of your adjustments manually.

Some additional information for someone reading this post:

I also kept the old RAW processing, and now these photos from my old D200 looks exactly as they did in Aperture 2, which I prefer. Last time, when I had upgraded the RAW processing as well, it totally changed the look of the images, so I had to spend more time making new adjustments. By not upgrading, I saved all that work too, which was nice.

Also, before installing Aperture 2, I renamed the Aperture 3 app to Aperture 3. Now I have both Aperture 2 and 3 installed and both work fine. I'm on 10.8.5.
