I need to read the data on these floppies. The original computer is long gone. The only floppy disk drive I could find works only with Windows, which wants to format the disks because they were originally mac-formatted. Catch-22! Does anyone have a hack for this? I'm willing to buy hardware or software if necessary. I also have a macbook pro retina running 10.8.

Clearly it will only be useful if the data is just that - data, readable by an app on your G5.
A Windows PC can be used to read 1.44 MB Mac-formatted floppies, but that would require a special utility (such as TransMac).
Please note that a PC floppy drive cannot handle 800K Mac floppies. The same is true for an external USB floppy drive connected to a Mac. So, if you have a 3.5" Mac-formatted diskette that is not HD (1.44 MB), an older (pre-1998) Macintosh computer with a built-in floppy drive must be used.
