Time capsule failing to backup

Hi.

I am having a weird problem with my Time Capsule. Apple does not seem to want to help; they say that I am using the Time Capsule in an unsupported configuration.

Can anybody help here??

In short, I am using the Time Capsule (TC) as a network storage device only. It's RF is turned off and it is in bridge mode, so it is not offering DHCP or DNS, etc. It is on my home network. I used ONLY the standard Apple Airport Utility to configure the TC.

The TC is running 7.6.3 and my Mac is an Macbook Pro with Retina display, 16 GB memory, with 750 GB solid state disk running OS X 10.8.3.

The symptom is that, after the TC is initialized, I connect my Mac via Cat5 Ethernet and start the backup. It backs up fine and will continue its periodic backup for sometime; could be two days or several weeks. Then, it fails with a popup (see below).

I have power cycled, tried different network connections, reset the TC, reloaded the OS, and its even a new Mac and a new TC. Oh, my first TC is running like a champ, in the exact same configuration (different IP's, of course), and supporting my wife's and daughter's Macs - same version of Mac OS X. I have factory reset the TC and had this recur more than a dozen times.

There have been a number of open tickets during which the Apple Support people would send me the Data Capture application; I would run it, send them the data and then never heard back from them. This has happened twice. This last week, while in between consulting gigs, I dedicated some time to this and was told by one of the Apple support people that it is an unsupported configuration. They say the device has to be the main router, and the first router behind a cable modem (or BHR, as in the case of FiOS). I went nuts. No standards compliant device should care.

So, as a last resort, before I toss this thing out the window (saving the hard drive, of course), I come to the people here for ideas or others' experiences. My view is that the device should not care where it is in the network hierarchy.

The details, including the log output (which the Apple guy today did not even want to see because it was a non-standard configuration) is all below.

I would really appreciate the help!

The TC is configured using Apple Airport Utility as follows:

-- Internet:

Configured with a static IP address 10.17.2.221

Physically, the TC's WAN port is connected to a Netgear JGS524 24-port 10/1000 switch which in turn is connected to a to a Netgear R6300 wireless router which in turn is connected to a Verizon FiOS BHR.

My Macintosh is a Macbook Pro Retina (mid 2012) running 10.8.3 and is connected via Ethernet into one of the switch ports in the back of the TC.

Wednesday, with the guidance of Apple Support, I reset my 3TB Time Capsule. I brought it up and configured it as above. I want the TC to be on my existing home network as a network-attached storage for my Macbook backups. I have a second, older 1TB Time Capsule configured exactly the same except for name and IP address, of course, that supports my wife's and daughter's Macbooks. This has been running without problem.

Backups had been running seemingly fine since March 20 afternoon after this.

Through Thursday early afternoon, it had been running fine. When I logged back in (screen saver protection) sometime after 5PM this afternoon, I saw the following pop-up:

Hi

well it is a most complete post.. maybe since ever.. I do not have time (at least in this lifetime) to read the entire log.

There are always lots of meaningless errors in the TM log so it is hard to figure which ones really matter.

There is a fundamental issue that has been causing issues between TC and Mountain Lion that causes network loss of connection. The computer fails to keep track of the TC hard disk whereabouts. It has simply lost it.

I don't recall seeing your exact error message.. error 112 .. ?? But I would say from the last line in the log, the failure to eject the disk image from the last backup will result in the sparsebundle no longer being accessible.. TM must mount the sparsebundle at the beginning of each backup.. any failure to dismount will result in complete failure of TM until the situation is fixed by your personally rebooting the TC or the using the disconnect all users.. which Apple forgot to include in the latest airport utility.

I do not have a fix.. and you are quite right.. there is no reason the setup of the TC should have anything to do with this issue. You have given it a static IP in the range being used.. that should reduce the chance of anything happening.. unfortunately of course it doesn't work quite like that.

Read the C12 and C17 info in pondini, if you haven't already.

http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html

The C12 issue that the sparsebundle is already in use is our most common question here.. asked 5times a day on average.. the sparsebundle could not be accessed is probably once or twice a day.

How often it happens is exactly as you descibe it.. almost totally random.. could be daily, some even have it happen several times a day. Could be couple of times a week..

Some things that might help.

Names that are short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.. but you seem to have already done that. C9 in pondini also goes through that.

I think the basics of it is network failure compounded with the changes introduced in AFP protocol at Lion.. The TC runs NetBSD and although Apple changed the firmware to adjust the security of AFP to match, it has never really worked properly.

To get access to "disconnect all users" which will fix the problem generally, as it forces the sparsebundle to dismount, you need to use v5 utility.. the other big advantage is gives you access to log which apple in its wisdom decided nobody needs. The log in the TC will show AFP authenication.

The method of installing 5.6 is listed in several posts .. just google.

Here is mine.

How to load 5.6 into ML.

1. Download 5.6 for Lion.

http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482

Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.

2. Download and install unpkg.

http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/

Run unpkg on the desktop.. it is very simple.. drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. drill down.. applications utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.

You cannot uninstall 6.1 (now 6.2 if you updated) so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. so just ignore the toyland version.. the plastic hammer.. and start using 5.6.. a real tool.

For screen shots see this post.

LaPastenague,

Thanks for taking the time. I shall review what you wrote and check out the references.

You are right in that I shouldn't have put that full log in. I guess I wanted to show that things were working.

So, here's the log of the failing backup session, somewhat annotated:

Here's the normal backup session startup:

And now, the Error. This seems to be the beginning of the end. It seems there were 5 file access problems of some sort. To me, this looks like it was trying to access file/data from the remotely mounted Time Capsule and it failed for some reason.

That does seem to happen, more than it used to, but I question calling it a "fundamental issue" with Mountain Lion. I back up to a Time Capsule (and a USB drive connected to one) usually wirelessly, and haven't seen it myself, even during beta testing.

It may be more susceptible to some kinds of problems, or in certain circumstances, but it's not like everybody's TC backups are failing at a high rate.

That makes no sense, and as far as I can tell, there's nothing in any Apple support article saying that. Then again, it isn't common, and I haven't tested that setup, so don't know if there's some odd bug.

I'd strongly suggest you call AppleCare back, and politely but firmly ask for a link to the documentation that says you can't use an option that Airport Utility allows. If they refuse, ask (again, politely but firmly) to "escalate" the matter to the next level (and the next).

EDIT: please disregard:

The 5 error messages you posted all refer to the same file in the same backup (3/21/13 @ 15:07:31). It's a file in your Contacts; the basic card for one Contact.

The message is saying there's a problem with the copy of that file on your backups; just to be sure there isn't something damaged in the original, you might want to navigate to the original (per the message), double-click it to display it, write the info down or screen print it, then delete and re-enter the contact. That will give it a new file name (the long gibberish string).

Then run a backup and see what happens, and let us know the results.

True enough.. what I meant was that the issue is at a network fundamental level.. once it starts it is not able to be fixed by any method I know. Somewhere the network stability got lost. But I wish I knew more about where because I cannot identify it.

I know from my repair work where I have fixed dozens of TC.. if I use 7.6 firmware on a TC or it comes in with that firmware, then on my computer running SL I will have problems.. not immediately but after a day or so..totally reproducible, flash back to 7.5.2 firmware and it stops. Since I try and test the repair for a day or so..

I only recently got a laptop running ML so I am simply not as up with that OS as with SL.. but I am unimpressed. So far on every second wake from sleep the laptop has forgotten where the wireless is.. I have to go in and select the wireless again.. that is a clean installed ML. Why would it forget on every second wake?? It all makes little sense to me.

And a USB external drive that works fine on SL is not even recognised by ML.. so i keep going back to SL.. and it all runs with such stability and lack of issues.. I cannot help feeling.. Apple went forward two steps and back several. Obviously my experience is me.. and my setup and my equipment.

Anyway I was hoping you would pop in even if it is just to tell me off.. to identify what is going on with this guys backups.. why does it stop working.. and the different error number he gets. Happy to pass it on to an expert!!!

I have no idea. I have seen a few posts about WIFI not getting re-established after wake, and some say it's much better on 10.8.3, but I haven't seen it on my Mac in a long time, and I don't think on ML at all. But I do have a near-ideal setup.

And no, I don't mean to be "telling you off" -- there are folks with WIFI problems, but also plenty without, and I can't see any particular reason for the difference. But I'm doing it all via the forums, not with my hands on anybody else's hardware or setup.

Now, back to Armando's situation . . . if I can get my eyes un-crossed 😉

Yes, it does not make sense. In fact, I said as much going on to say that if that was the case, if the TC cared about where it was in the network hierarchy, I thought it was a problematic design with respect to the RFC's and other network standards. It fell on deaf ears. I also pointed out that I used the Apple distributed program selecting Apple supplied options. I also asked for pointers to the documentation as I was looking at the online documentation - the guy said the restriction was not documented.

We reach - we think in similar ways. I asked the guy to escalate me to the next level and he said he was the highest level. I asked about Engineering whereupon he said he was the highest level for this. When I asked to speak to his supervisor, he said his supervisor would not get on the phone unless it was an escalation about his performance (attitude, etc.). I really didn't have a problem with his attitude to the extent he was reflecting Apple's position - it was just hard to believe that this was the case. Regardless, I didn't attempt to go to his supervisor.

Good suggestion; I just looked into this. But, it did not make sense to me that a damaged original would cause this kind of error. I suspect were the file data corrupted, it would copy the corrupted data. And, if it was a file structure or on-disk error, the system would have burped when trying to read that area of the disk (containing the Address Book record).

But, for arguents' sake, I tracked down and looked at the raw files (in TextEdit as well as in /usr/bin/od via the shell) and the files' contents and their metadata looked fine. Also, their address record in AddressBook looked fine. There were no errors reported during any of these accesses.

I did not go onto the TC to find and look.

What I have not looked into is if there is an on-disk (bad spot) on the TC hard drive. I should see how to verify that....

I wouldn't go into much detail about the problem, just the setup, that Airport Utility allows it, but Apple Care says it's unsupported, but can't or won't provide documentation, or explain why, or escalate further.

It does seem unlikely for the problem to start on the internal HD, but that doesn't entirely rule out problems with metadata, extended attributes, etc.

If you run another backup, does it complain about the same 5 files?

I don't know much about the 3rd-party disk utilities, but suspect few, if any, can look at a TC's internal HD. 😟

When you erased it before, did you do a quick erase, or a zero-out? A zero-out might find a problem, if there is one, although again it doesn't really seem like a disk problem.

By the way, are you near an Apple Store? I've heard some folks have taken TC's to them, detailed their problems, and Apple just gives them a new (probably refurbished) one. Might be worth a shot.

Now, let me ask about your setup . . .

What's the router?

Is the TC connected to it via Ethernet?

How is the other TC connected?

How old are the cables -- they do get frayed sometimes, often invisibly, and start throwing intermittent errors. Or the tiny pins get slightly bent or minute bits of foreign matter on them. Do you have another one?

After the first backup via Ethernet, are you doing the others via Ethernet, or are you switching to WIFI?

Good morning, Pondini.

If file system-level metadata (inodes, extended attributes, etc.) were problematic, I'd expect to have seen system-level errors in the logs, during running of both the backups and AddressBook. If application-level (AddressBook) metadata were problematic, I'd have expected errors to appear from during the running of the AddressBook but backups should have proceeded happily....

I oritinally used the quick erase. Good suggestion on the zero-out erase; I just started the that. Ugh, 1 day 7:25 hours to complete the zero-out erase! 🙂

Physically, the Macbook was plugged into the switch ports in the back of the TC; the TC's WAN port is connected to a Netgear JGS524 24-port 10/1000 switch which in turn is connected to a to a Netgear R6300 wireless router which in turn is connected to a Verizon FiOS BHR.

Cables are relatively new and in great shape. The Mac was not disconnected from the Ethernet from the time the TC was initialized to, well, even to now! RF on the Mac is turned off.

The erase time has started to settle out; it's now 12 hours 16 min.

The idea to write a letter to Tim Cook is a good one. Snail mail - what a concept. I will have to find a pen and paper and an envelope and even visit a US Post Office.....

LaPastenague and Pondini: thank you guys for taking the time on this! This has had me running for almost a year across two different Macintosh laptops and two different time capsules.

aps.

Yes, I'd expect that, too. But there are cases where nothing is apparent, no messages are sent. For example, on rare occasions, something in a folder, sometimes a user home folder, gets damaged, causing TM to either back all it's contents up each time, or not back it up at all. Nobody, including Apple, ever seemed to figure out what was wrong or how to just fix it; the only solution was to recreate the folder and move the contents. No big deal, unless it's a user home folder, where copying from one to another is such a hassle.

(Now that I think about it, I haven't seen one of those in a while, so maybe Apple fixed it, intentionally or not.)

Well, there's no way I can duplicate that!

I was thinking about setting my Airport Extreme as the router, connecting my TC to it in bridge mode and backing-up to it (wirelessly) that way, to see if I can replicate your symptoms, but I'm doubtful.

Yeah, a pain, and unlikely to tell you anything, but probably worth the time. 😟

I wouldn't go that far, as they'd never be able to read my writing!

Some folks have had success by e-mailing, but I suspect a physical letter is unusual enough to get some extra attention. 😉
