XML Placement for Podcast?

Hi all,

Where do I place the XML feed as outlined on http://www.apple.com/itunes/podcasts/specs.html#example?

I'm confused where all this information even goes behind the scenes so iTunes has the podcast information/author/descrip:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>

In the RSS Feed? I'm using feedburner and it's giving me no option to input XML code.

In the blog itself? Where in the HTML tag for each podcast post?

In the audio file somehow? In the media description on each MP3?

I must be missing something because I can't find this information anywhere. Even Apple care staff couldn't help me.

Thanks for any guidance.

Yvette

Once you have created an XML feed (which is a text file in special format) you place it on your webspace server; you then submit the URL to the iTunes Store. Are you using Feedburner alone or submitting a feed made elsewhere to it? If you are asking about adding specific tags can you give more detail - the one you quote should be there automatically and needs to be only at the very top of the feed.

The Apple Tech note you linked to is comprehensive and a useful reference but it's an awful lot to take in in one go. May I suggest you read my 'get you started' page on podcasting which hopefully is a little less indigestible.

This should clarify at least some of it for you, and do please come back with any further questions. And please post the URL of the feed (both of there is an original and a Feedburner one).

Thanks Roger!

When you say "place it on your webspace server" where am I doing that exactly? That is where I am confused. With my host, Godaddy? Or on my wordpress blog?

My feedburner feed: http://iheartlifeinc.com/?feed=rss2

My WP blog: http://iheartlife.com

I haven't put any XML feed directly on my site or with my host Godaddy, I just added some iTunes info into the 'SmartCast' area on Feedburner.

Thank you for your response!!!

Oh, and I've been devouring your site, Podcast411, but all that still eludes me (and I can't seem to find the answer or it's going wayyyyy over my head) is where to actually place my XML feed.

I've already sent in my podcast feed (http://iheartlifeinc.com/?feed=rss2) url to iTunes for review. I'm still awaiting word. In the meanwhile, I'll keep posting episodes on my blog--is that recommended?

Thanks!

Your blog is actually at http://iheartlifeinc.com.

The feed has two episodes, though only one of them has a playable media file. (iTunes does not display episodes which have no playable media).

The feed works in iTunes when subscribing manually, with the episode showing; however it's not a properly constructed podcast feed, lacking the 'itunes declaration' (the second line in my sample feed) and any 'itunes:...' tags - Wordpress is creating it as a blog feed, not a podcast feed. It is possible to create a proper podcast feed in Wordpress but I can't advise on how to do that.

The 'Subscribe in iTunes' links on the site lead at present to the blog page; you will need to change that to the iTunes Store page once your feed has been accepted and you've been given the URL of your Store page.

Your feed should be accepted - your server does accept the required 'byte range requests') but to get the best out of iTunes you need to look into getting the itunes: tags into it.

You ask where to place your XML feed - you have already done that, it's what you've subitted to iTunes. Incidentally you refer to this as being a Feedburner feed - it isn't: if you submit your feed to Feedburner it will give you a feed it has generated from it, with a URL begining feeds.feedburner.com. However you've now submitted the original feed to iTunes so you should stick with that for the moment.

Feedburner isn't involved in this: iTunes is using the feed at http://iheartlifeinc.com/feed/ and as I said before, it doesn't have the 'itunes declaration' nor any of the tags such as itunes:image, itunes:subtitle and so on. No amount of alterations in Feedburner is going to have any effect unless you transfer the iTunes Store to using the Feedburner feed. To do this you will have to add a special tag to the feed, and I don't know whether this is even possible in WordPress. Alternatively you could try emailing them at podcasts 'at' apple.com and asking them to change to the Feedburner feed - you should subscribe manually to this feed first and make sure that it really does work.

The redirection tag process is described a the bottom of my page which I linked to above. You may be able to sort this out in Feedburner, but it would be better to get the Wordpress feed working properly: it has to be set to be suitable for iTunes but I'm afraid I can't advise on how you do this, only that I've seen it working for other people so it is possible.

Hi Roger,

This still isn't working for me. I've created a new rss feed to submit to iTS, uploaded the XML file to my root directory on my WP blog and still no published album cover, details, etc for my podcast page on iTS: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/iheartlife/id625779812

This is my xml file, anything wrong here:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>

<rss xmlns:itunes="http://www.itunes.com/dtds/podcast-1.0.dtd" version="2.0">

The following rss feeds (burned via Google Feedburner) both point to http://iheartlifeinc.com which houses the XML code above:

Feed #1: http://iheartlifeinc.com/?feed=rss2 (validated and submitted, approved last week, available at iTS link above)

New Feed #2: http://iheartlifeinc.com/feed/ (not validating, not approved)

What can I possibly be doing wrong?

Thank you!

Yvette

The feed the itunes Store is looking for is

http://iheartlifeinc.com/feed/

This is not loading. When trying it in FireFoxI got the error mesage:

The page isn't redirecting properly

Firefox has detected that the server is redirecting the request for this address in a way that will never complete.

The 'itunes:image' tag is correct and leads to an image, but as iTunes cannot access your feed your podcast is not subscribable to and will not update.

Mar 28, 2013 1:28 PM in response to Roger Wilmut1

It's working now, this is the feed: http://iheartlifeinc.com/?feed=rss2

I figured it out. Per your last message, I'd installed a WP plugin (FD Feedburner Plugin) that redirects the feed to Feedburner thinking I had to point iTS to Feedburner because you said iTS was reading a blog, not a podcast feed. So I might not need to do that?

I deleted the redirect and now the feed is validating.

Still so lost at this point.

Mar 28, 2013 1:49 PM in response to iheartlife

The feed is now working when subscribed to. The requisite tags are now there, incuding the 'itunes declaration', so whatever you've done has worked.

However the 'itunes"image tag is not as you give above, but is

<itunes:image href="http://iheartlifeinc.com/wp-content/plugins/powerpress/itunes_default.jpg" />

This is default WordPress image, not your own image. Presumably there is a way of replacing it with your image. When you do so you should expect the Store to take some days for it to appear.

Mar 28, 2013 3:04 PM in response to iheartlife

The Feedburner feed is irrelevant: iTunes is not using it. It's using the feed at

http://iheartlifeinc.com/feed/

and the 'itunes:image' tag in that is as I quoted above, referencing the default PowerPress image which is now showing in your iTunes Store page. I imagine that it's a placeholder and you will have to find a way to substitute your own image. When you do it may take some days to appear in the Store (although the present one has inf fact appeared quite quickly - it appears to be a lottery how long it takes).

Hi Roger,

Everything seems to be working fine, at least the episode 1 and the image and descriptions are populating correctly, but now my new epsiode (posted on blog on Sunday, 31 Mar) isn't publishing to iTunes. Should I be doing something to my feed like says here in Feedburner FAQ:

  1. Sign in to your FeedBurner account.
  2. Click the title of your FeedBurner feed on the My Feeds page.
  3. On the feed management page that appears, click the Edit Feed Details... link just below your feed's title.
  4. In the Original Feed Address field, change the address listed there from an example like the following:

    Code:
    http://myblogname.blogspot.com/atom.xml

    OR
    http://myblogname.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default

    to the following format:

    Code:
    http://myblogname.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default?max-results=3

(Note that max-results sets the number of posts you want to have appear in your FeedBurner feed. Any integer value between 1 and 500 is permitted.)

  5. Click Save Feed Details. Your changes are immediately applied and FeedBurner re-burns the newly shortened (or lengthened) feed.

I did that and changed orginal feed to what they recommended, but it's not what iTunes knows is my feed, and instead feedburner gave me this error when updating the feed name: Received HTTP error: "Not Found" while fetching source feed.

So I have 2 episodes on the blog, http://iheartlifeinc.com but it's not updating to iTunes. I'm using PowerPress plugin (http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/powerpress/) on the WP blog. Is there something I need to do with each new audio/mpeg file when I post it so that iTunes gets it? Is the plugin blocking something for me? Whenever I add a new audio file to my blog, I thought it should update on iTunes within 24 hours?

Apr 3, 2013 10:15 AM in response to iheartlife

iTunes is not using the Feedburner feed so it doesn't matter how much messing about you do with that. Nothing you do with the Feedburner feed will have any effect whatever.

iTunes is using the feed at http://iheartlifeinc.com/feed/

The episode of April 1 does not have an 'enclosure' tag containing the URL of a playable media file, and so iTunes will never show the episode until you fix that.

You need to stop looking at the Feedburner feed and investigate WordPress to find out why it's not forming that episode as a proper podcast episode.
