Iphone 5 turning off at 40% battery power

Hi guys.

Today when I played music through spotify to my car audio system (through minijack), my iPhone 5 turned itself off in the same way it does when the battery is empty. At this point, the battery was at 40%. When I tried turning it on immediately after, the 'connect to power outlet' symbol showed up.

I also remember I used the snapchat app at that point.

Now a couple of hours later, I could turn it on normally and I have 40% power left.

At the moment I'm running iOS 6.1.3 and I've never experienced this before.

Has anyone else had this problem? Could it be related to the amount of power drawn through the headphone jack?

Thanks!

I have this problem as well. I'm running an iPhone 5 with iOS 7.0.3. Last week the phone turned off when the battery percentage was at 30%. The same problem happened to me occassionally when I was running iOS 6, although always when the battery was < 10%.

I went to the Genius Bar the other day and their diagnostics indicated that my battery was normal. They were unable to explain the problem, and just gave me some general tips for improving battery life.

I have not yet tried a full restore to factory settings, but I might try next weekend once I have some free time.

My iPhone 5 running ios 7.0.4 does the same thing. It will power off at 40% giving me a dead battery icon when its cold outside. It will only reboot after giving it a "jump start" plugging it in, and gives an immediate 40% battery indication. Very frusterating! I'm about to bring it in to the Apple Store for a replacement.

I'm also experiencing this. Even at 40%-50% the phone shuts down when I open even a simple app. So much more when its fb. I accept that leaving apps open drains the battery faster but simply opening one shuts it off? My friends say I should take this to an apple service center to have this checked. Any comment from Apple here?

To follow up on my previous post, I finally got around to doing a full factory restore, as suggested by Dave Kitabjian. I wasn't able to restore from a previous backup, because it turned out that my backups had been corrupted. So I set up the phone as a new device.

This didn't seem to resolve the problem; this morning while using my phone, it shut off at 13%.

Update:

While the full restore appeared to fix the problem, or perhaps fixed it for a while, the problem has been back for some time :-( Shuts off randomly, and sometimes it will let me turn it back on later.

Apple seriously needs to get their act together.

The idea of going out and spending $80-100 on a battery pack or $80 in lightning cables to leave at work, in the car, and everywhere to compensate for basic battery operation is not acceptable.

Same problem here. iPhone 5 / iOS7.0.5.

Luckily I use a Mophie Juice Pack so I can give the phone a life-saving dose of defibrillation on the move. It's a pain in the butt, though, particularly when in the middle of a call (as happened today)....

I wonder if it has something to do with a memory-leakage or a crashing app...

Just had a lovely-but-essentially-useless phone call with Apple Support by the way; they're certainly aware of this 'ball' rolling around, but they're paraplegic unfortunately...

Cheers,

Jason

I am having the exact same issue; iPhone 5 iOS 7.0.4 will show 30% to 40% battery remaining, then just shut off.

Even more annoying is that when I plug it back in, it is still at 30% or 40% even though clearly it's dead flat.

The phone will occasionally power back on if I keep trying, then be at the percentage it shut off at, but then shut off as soon as I use any app or try to do anything.

Temporary solution was to buy a 8400 mAH battery back which can fully charge the phone about 4 times. Is this the solution to iPhone battery woes? Carrying a battery pack the size of two iPhones in addition to the iPhone?

PS: Another pet peeve is the "Usage" indicator - mine currently says I "used" the phone since the last full charge for 9 hours. I can most certainly say that I did not just spend 9 hours staring at my screen so whatever this value is, it's not how much I used the phone.

All the problems described in this thread started happenning to my iPhone 5 after upgrading it to ios 7 and just 2 weeks out of warranty.

My phone shuts down at 40% battery life if I launch a single app.

It shuts down way above 40% if it is cold outside, so skiing with this phone fully charged kills it within 1 hour.

Needless to say, I can no longer rely on this phone when venturing to the back country.

My phone usage is _very_ light, data streaming is ocasional, so 1 year of service should not have suddenly killed the battery.

I have another year to go on my Verizon contract, so I guess I will be switching to a different phone brand.

Thanks Apple!
