print option missing --draft

After a recent purchase of a mac mini with Mountain Lion, I find that my print quality options no longer contain "draft." This was an option I frequently used in order to save ink.

I have a Canon MX 712 with all available updates installed. Is there a way I can once again print drafts?

I have a mac mini OSX10.8.2

"About this Mac" says:

2.5 GHz Intel i5

4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

Mac mini, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

I think you will find that the setting is now called Fast and is located under the Quality & Media menu as shown below.

Thank you for yur reply. Unfortunately, I have checked Quality and Media. Earlier versions of OSX allowed the option I referred to. My husband's mini is running OSX 10.6 (Lion) networked to the same printer. His choices are "fast, fine, and standard." My choices were the same until I installed Mt. Lion I now see a slider with three options "draft, normal, best" The "draft" option is grey and cannot be chosen.

I would like you to check what driver and version you have installed. To do this, open System Information (Applications > Utilities) and then select Printers in the left column. If you have more than just one printer, then you will see a top right pane showing all the printers and scanners installed. Select the MX712 from this list and then bottom right pane will show information about it. If you only have the MX712, then after selecting the Printers entry the right pane will show its information.

Could you copy the information shown and paste it back here please.

Thank you for providing that information. It shows you are using the AirPrint printer driver, which has a reduced number of features compared to the full driver.

So open Print & Scan and remove the MX712, by selecting it and then pressing the minus button.

Then click the plus button to add again. Now when you see a little window appear showing the MX712, do not select this. Instead, click on Add Printer or Scanner. This will open another window showing some icons at the top - Default, Fax, IP and Windows. With the Default view selected, the MX712 should be visible. Select it and then look at the Use menu. This will select the AirPrint printer. But if you click this and then select MX712 Series and then click Add, this driver will give you back the settings like you had previously.

Sorry--the screen shot evidently did not show in my reply. I pasted it in the reply box and saw it but it is not visible now. My printer choices were Canon MX710 series Bonjour Multifunction and Canon IJ Network

Use options did have AirPrint on my second try and I chose that. However the print options still were draft (grey unavailable) Normal, best. My husband's mac mini with Lion is networked with the same printer using airport and the airport worked fine for me before i changed to Mountain Lion...a big puzzle. He can print in draft mode and I no longer can.

Select the one showing Canon IJ Network.

Selecting Canon IJ Network should set the Use menu to Canon MX710 Series. If it shows AirPrint, change it to Canon MX710 Series.

Note that the AirPrint driver is the one that does not give you the options. So that is why you should select Canon MX710 Series.

Problem solved! Thank you so much for your patience. I evidently misunderstood details of your previous suggestion and I really apreciate your clarification. I plan to save this information in case my options and preferences get lost again. In fact, I just finished pasting your solution onto a word document and printing it on the "fast" setting.

Hi PAHU and thank you for the information! I have a Photosmart (110a) and I had the same problem with my printer it would not give me the option of fastdraft whereas I had previously had it. But after my upgrade to mountain lion it had gone, but now thanks to your advice about a different printer the same advice applied my printer, I changed the setting from AirPrint driver to Photosmart and hey presto I now have fastdraft you have made my day.

PAHU, brilliant!

I had the same question that Ms. Shaw had... My draft option was greyed out on my MacBook Air--even though I had just newly downloaded the print driver!

However, my first time printing with the new Brother was via wireless and an iPad, so it must have, somehow, assumed that's what it should use. Silly, that, however! The Mac OS should be smart enough to know that you are printing from a Mac, not an iOS device, and switch drivers automatically (or not even have the Airprint one installed!).

In any event, Fast is back (no draft), and located under Print Settings, which on other printers has been a summary. There's also a color or greyscale choice.

Now, if only Airprint would give one the same options--and, giving wishes wings--also include a Print Preview! 🙂

Mavericks, anyone?! 😁

I exhausted all avenues with Canon to resolve my printing issue the same as above-no draft printing options in fact no options were allowed because nothing moved or changed. However, this suggestion was the fix !!!!! I'm so happy to have found it. Thank you so much. I will send Canon this solution but you should get the credit. : )

Mar 22, 2014 3:30 AM in response to igirl1

I just discovered that doing the above BREAKS THE SCANNER FUNCTION on my Canon printer.

The fix -

Add back the Canon/AirPrint driver in Print/Scan Preferences.

Click the plus button to add it again. Now when you see a little window appear showing the (printer name), do select this.

But you'll also have to rename it - otherwise you won't be able to differentiate the regular driver from the AirPrint driver. Right Click (two finger tap on Trackpad) the printer name in Scan/Print Preferences and rename. I renamed mine to Canon... AirPrint.

Before and after screenshots - note the scanner reappears in the Print/Scan Preferences - and also in the Utility window.
