Front Row running Super SLOW!

I just got a MacBook Pro about a month ago and since I've gotten it Front Row always seems to stall at a certain point when I am trying to go to a different menu. For example, I recently watched a TV show and I was trying to get out of Front Row. I got all the way until the bar was on TV shows and when I hit menu again to get to the previous screen it froze on me for about 20-30 seconds (this one in particular happens a lot).

How do I get this fixed?

My Mac is extremely fast and I am just confused as to why this happens.

I have:

AC3MovieImport.component
AppleIntermediateCodec.compon
Flip4Mac WMV Advanced.component
Flip4Mac WMV Export.component
Flip4Mac WMV Import.component
Perian.component

as well, so unless it's a conflict between one of the above and another you have, it's reasonable to assume one of the above is not at fault. Hence, I recommend first checking the remaining codecs are up to date, and if not, to update them and test Front Row again.

If this does not resolve the issue, remove one of the codecs at a time, testing Front Row in between, or alternatively, remove all, and replace each one by one testing after replacing each codec.

I think it could be the DivX and FLV codecs that are compromising the performance of Front Row (espeacially if you have the latest Quicktim update). I had a similar problem as a result the DivX components conflicting with Quicktime.

If you are using the latest perian plugin then the DivX and FLV components are redundant. Move them from 'HD'/Library/QuickTime to your desktop, reboot and see if FR runs any quicker.

Tim, Front Row requires the use of other programs to run, for instance to play video FR uses Quicktime and to play photo slideshows it uses iPhoto. However, FR needs to run iTunes before it can work. So what was happening in your case was simply a result of Front Row opening iTunes for you, as such, you should have noticed it running quicker after the initial access.

Hi,

I had the exact same problem - but it only started after the latest update to Quicktime (in the iTunes update). Basically, I went into my Library/Quicktime folder and deleted all the components. Then, restarted and emptied the recycle bin (it won't let you empty until you've restarted).
Once that was done, I went to www.perian.org and downloaded the Perian plug-in for Quicktime (basically a catch-all solution for all known video formats); mounted and installed it.
Hey presto! All back to normal. My bedtime movie viewing has resumed!

Cheers,

Shifty.

Installing Perian solved the problem for me as well. In addition, FR is now able to play videos that it choked on before. By choking I mean one of 3 things would happen:

1)video would be audio only
2)Cause FR to crash when previewing
3)Cause FR to crash when playing

Media Central had no trouble withe the same videos prior to installing Perian.

Hooray for Perian!
