HELP! My Library keeps resetting itself

Hello all

Since yesterday my iTunes library has reset itself, twice! I am on a HP Pavilion DV7 running Windows 8 with iTunes 11.0.2. It has been a while since I updated the software and have done absolutely nothing to my music folders or iTunes. It was working fine then when I fired it up yesterday morning everything was gone. I have tried reloading the library but the only library file is the blank library.

All my music is still on my computer it's just not in complied into a library anymore. And for some reson the only playlists i have in my iTunes folder are ones from several months ago that have since been deleted, updated, renamed (within iTunes itself), etc. I have 5000+ songs and I really don't want to try to repopulate my library again until I can get this problem solved. Here is a list of the files that are currently in my iTunes folder.

  • iTunes Library (1) - 9/1/2011 - iTunes Database File
  • iTunes Library Extras (1) - 8/17/2010 - iTunes Database File
  • iTunes Library Extras - 9/3/2011 - iTunes Database File
  • iTunes Library Genius (1) - 8/17/2010 - iTunes Database File
  • iTunes Library Genius - 9/3/2011 - iTunes Database File
  • iTunes Library - 3/26/2013 - iTunes Database File (This is the current library file that is blank)
  • iT 1.tmp - 7/24/2011
  • iT 2.tmp - 3/24/2013
  • iT 3.tmp - 3/26/2013
  • iT.tmp - 7/23/2011
  • Temp File.tmp - 2/20/2013
  • iTunes Music Library - 3/26/2013 - XML Document

Out of all those files what can i delete? I feel like half of those aren't needed.

Is anyone else having this problem?

Thank you for any help you can provide

MSE got a good review here from tt2, also a good review online from a couple of website reviewers. It lacks good comments from my personal computer guru but she's a Linux person.

I removed AVG and the latest version of iTunes. Just at the moment I hate them both for letting me down in such a big way. I take it personally.

I installed MSE and an earlier version of iTunes, and I'm considering an even earlier version. Somewhere there exists a version I liked better.

iTunes has not reset since AVG was replaced by MSE.

AVG didn't go without a struggle, so I was pleasantly surprised when MSE installed so easily.

Follow up - I still have my AVG Internet Security paid subscription running and have not lost my iTunes library again since I posted on their support forum. Perhaps they fixed something in the paid version but haven't fixed it in the free version, which kind of makes sense - take care of paying customers first. Hopefully the free version will get fixed too. I am crossing my fingers, but just figured I'd drop in to make note of this.

Hi guys,

I'd like to let you know that developers found the cause. It's invalid error handling in iTunes together with scanning of AVG scanning core. Fix is being prepared and should be released soon (today or later this week) via Virus database update.

Note that iTunes database should remain untouched, it's just blocked.

Thanks, Franta. "

So, this happened to me two days ago, and I was able to get the library back from a .tmp file, only having to do a few corrections.

Unfortunately enough, it happened again this morning. This time not only are *none* of the temp files of any use, but the iTunes Library I backed up onto my desktop was also deleted. So I have no way of rebuilding my library of 7,000 songs, which I was very careful to keep organized every single time I added anything to it.

I had AVG on my computer thinking an extra layer of protection couldn't possibly hurt. Instead of keeping me safe of the "evil" internet however, all it's done is make a mess of the one thing in my life that's supposed to keep me sane - my music.

I have no issues uninstalling AVG and I will not being using any other AV program besides Common Sense 2013 until this problem is fixed. If this had happened a couple years ago I'd have the free time to sit down and build a 7,000 song library from the ground up, but sadly that isn't the case anymore.

It's like a kid jumping into a pile of leaves you've freshly raked; scattering all of your work into a mess, and not seeming to care. Meh.
