Bounce in place on external midi not working

I created an instrument track and hosted an external hardware synth via the I/O. everything plays back fine, but when I try and bounce the track to audio via the bounce in place function nothing happens, has anyone else had this issue? Is it not possibe to bounce a hardware synth via the midi instrument plug in as the manual suggests?

Not exactly:

If you intended to use "bounce in place" with external MIDI you are out of luck, so you will need to convert to audio using methods described earlier.

You could simply leave the External Synth running "live", and just do the final Bounce in realtime.

Thanks for the reply. So let me get this straight, even though I am using an "Instrument Track" with the external synth plugin, I cannot bounce like the manual suggests. I was under the impression that so long as you use the method of hosting the external sythn as if it were a software synth via a Instrument track/external midi plug in the I/O one could then bounce the track to audio as if it were a software synth but you say oterwise no. So I need to locate the realtime bounce. Are you saying I need to create an audio track and re-record the track as audio, or is there another way to realtime bounce? I don't see a function called realtime bounce. Here is were i'm confused , if you cannot bounce an external midi as suggested, what is the purpose of the external midi plugin?

thanks you have pointed me in the correct direction.

In a nutshell, any external MIDI instrument requires a "feed" of real-time MIDI information to 'do it's thing'. This cannot happen with an offline bounce, so you have to Bounce in Real-time.

You could either:

set the output of your "External Software Instrument" Channel to a bus, create an audio track with that bus as an input, then record as normal

or

Create an audio track with the inputs assigned to the inputs where your external synth are, and record as normal

or

Solo the "External Software Instrument" channel, use File:Bounce (or the Bounce button etc) and select RealTime in the Bounce Dialog box. Then import the audio back into the Project.

It makes a basic External Instrument setup easier: select a Software Instrument channel, add the Plugin and setup MIDI Channels and audio returns in one go.

For further clarification purposes...

(Bounce) Mode buttons: You can create the bounce file in real time or offline
  • Realtime: Creates the bounce file in real time. Use this setting when you want to bounce audio and instrument tracks, plus external MIDI sound sources that are routed into the Logic Pro Mixer via aux channels.

  • Offline: Accelerates the bounce process, depending on the complexity of your arrangement and available system processing power. This setting also allows you to bounce arrangements that would normally exceed the processing power of your system, if trying to play them in real time. Offline bouncing is limited to internal sources (audio or instrument tracks). External MIDI tracks and audio channel inputs are deactivated during offline bounces. The Offline Bounce mode is only available to the output channels of devices that use native audio driver systems (Core Audio). DSP-based audio hardware cannot make use of offline bouncing due to the nature of its stream-oriented technology. (In other words, these devices only work in real time.) Other software applications that are fed into your Logic Pro Mixer via ReWire can be bounced offline.

See this link for a full explanation of the Bounce parameters..

ok got it , any external synth HAS to be recorded in real time as an audio track , even when using the instrumnt plug in method. I knew that..LOl just thought LP9 was able to render external midi using the instrument plug in for some reason. I think I'll not be using external synth on a regular basis as it is to time consumming, but if i get my hands on a korg triton 88 key controller synth , ,,...... thanks
