am i able to return an old device and get an updated device with discount?

I have an ipod 4th gen and am considering in getting an ipod 5th gen. I heard that i can turn the old ipod touch in and get the latest ipod touch (5th gen) with a discounted price. Is this true?

a friend said he recycled his old ipod (3rd gen i believe) at the apple store and they gave him a discount on his purchase of the ipod 4th gen

Apple will only give you a 10% discopunt for recycling. Better off selling it your self
