leaking battery

I have an iPod nano (less than a year) that has always had problems with the headset connection causing discoloration and eventually causing static and lack of continuity where I eventually have to have the headset replaced (so far ATT has exchanged my headset since it is the headset I use with my iPhone). However, now the headset is frozen in the jack and when I pull out the plug I noticed it is covered in a white powered substance - which I am assuming is battery corrosion. Since I received this as a gift (from a non-apple retail store), I would like to exchange/return this product - but don't want to receive another faulty product. Is this possible?

Depending on where you live, they might. Like I said registration implies having a valid purchase date which translates to easily finding out whether or not your product still has a valid warranty. My nano was still under warranty because of the purchase date, which the nice folks at the 5th avenue store had to check to replace it for me.

Again, my experience with this may be different from yours.
