Video chat did not respond

I have a curious situation happening.
I am trying to set up a video conferencing link with a supplier through work.
When he attempts to start a one way video chat the following happens.
• I get a message invitation
• I respond by accepting
• spinning beach ball of death for about a minute
• responds with a message saying Failed to start Video Chat because:
(buddy's name) did not respond.

The buddy has never been given an option to accept or decline.
We have also had limited success with file transfers too. generally getting a message ... Could not receive file (insert file name) from (buddy name and email address) an error occured.

Can anyone provide a little guidance please.

Thanks for the feedback chaps.
I take your point about the xbridge. It has been a poor performer for a long time. I will need to get a better one. As both you and Ralph are in the UK can you suggest a good alternative please.
Just to clarify. I have 10.4.6 at home and 10.3.9 at work. The downside is that our IT department aren't keen to help. They attribute that to security ... I think they just don't like macs.
Thanks again for your response.

Hi Dean,

My preference would be for a Linksys as that is what I have.

However newer versions such as the MIMO versions like the WRT54GX and Pre-N versions (next wireless 802.11 protocol) do not work with iChat
(WRT54GX is a router and not a modem).

Others prefer Netgears and the DG834 series seem to feature well here.
Again avoid Pre-N and MIMO devices here.

Alcatel do a range called the 500 series. Here again newer versions have version 5 firmware which can not have the SIP binding to port 5060 undone. These are normally the ones that end in a 6 like (546)
The 510 and 580 are OK if they have Firmware 4.2.x rather that the 4.3.x which is the version 5 firmware written for earlier devices.

D-Links seem to vary too much.

Apple has this list of devices (router and Modems) that are supposed to work Out-of-the-Box.

Thanks for the reply Ralph.
I had a chat to our work IT git and he said that they won't open up the firewall to allow video chat. As for home, I will throw the xbridge in the bin or sell it on ebay (not much difference really). I will head down to the Apple store tomorrow and buy one of the units you have suggested.

Thanks again for the advice.

The problem you are having is because although your Hermsdet X-Bridge is described as a modem it is in fact a single port router that performs NAT. NAT will prevent your iCHat connections from working unless you can either manually forward ports or there is an automatic method such as UPnP supported on the router. The X-Bridge does neither and that is why it fails.

The Netgear 632 is also a router and I don't know for sure but I don't think it has UPnP support. Do you use an Airport or are you connecting direct to the computer ?

You may want to look at the X-Modem while in the Apple Store (No relation to the X-Bridge).

The reason I asked about Airport is that many people make the mistake of pairing an ADSL router with an Airport. The default set-up results in effectively two routers as the Airport is a router as well. This results in iChat not working properly.

When using an Airport the easiest thing to do is use a pure modem like the X-Modem and let the Airport deal with the connection sharing as the Airport understands the way iChat works and automatically opens the necessary ports for iChat AV to work properly. You can get most ADSL routers to work but often you have to resort to fiddling with port forwarding meaning you are restricted to AV on one computer.
