I have 1600 photos on my iphone. All have been synced with itunes and iphoto! Now when I turn off sync photos for iphoto in itunes (wow thats a line full) the photos still remain on my phone! There is no select all under the photo edit button, so without going a screen full...25 at a time, there has to be a way to remove these!!

Are you referring to photos in the Camera Roll, or ones synced in the Photo Library?
Photos synced to the iPhone from iTunes and the computer can only be removed the same way. Uncheck the mark by sync photos and then sync the phone again. That will remove the photos.
There is a setting in iPhoto to remove them after transferring them.
Wrong, Ive done that several times, nothing gets removed. Nothing is checked in itunes
Can you answer the other questions I asked? Are these photos in the camera roll or synced from iTunes. Removal makes a difference.
Yes but they have already been synced and I didnt choose that option at that time! Looks like you only get one shot

The only way to remove the ones on the phone that have been synced from the computer is to unsync. You would not be able to delete them from the phone unless they are photos in the camera roll. If they are the photos in the camera roll, since you did not remove them when you imported them, the only other choice I see is to connect the phone to the computer, use Finder, and you should be able to delete the photos that way.

Do I access the photos from itunes or iphoto on my mac. Like I say I have tried unchecking photo sync in itunes
iPhoto. The Camera Roll is treated as a digital camera, separate from iTunes.
There seems to be no way to delete photos from my phone in iphoto. Cant even drag them to the trash! I have been using an iphone since they came out. Loading and unloading photos, they have really screwed this thing up! Guess I have to buy a camera!
First what version of ios are you useing? if up to date to the latest ios do,
camera roll/in the bottom left there is a folder with error coming out of it./next pick the photo and in the bottom pane choose trash can.
The feeling Im getting is no one really knows how to do this. My software is the most current, I think we can agree the software UI for this stinks!
As a long time user I am very disapointed. I wound up just editing and selecting each and every photo to be deleted one at a time. Took sometime but oh well, thanks for all the help!
I have the same problem. I usually don't delete the photos on my phone after I sync, but now there is a ton of wasted space on my iphone devoted to "photos" when I sync it and I tell iTunes not to sync any photos on the phone at all. iTunes still tells me there is 6GB of photos on my phone.
Here is what I think is the issue based on reading other's attempte to help.
When you tell iPhoto to 'Keep photos" instead of "Delete Photos" it leaves the original photo on your phone in the camera roll. These photos will no longer be accessible through iTunes or through iPhoto, they are now separate copies like on the hard drive of a camera. When iTunes syncs, it backs up your iPhone. When it does this, it indentifies these files as photos, but they are only part of the backup, not part of the sync, so it tells you you have a bunch of photos on your phone.
The simple solution is to individually delete them all from the Camera roll on your iPhone. (use the trash can) DO NOT delete them from iPhoto or they will be gone. DO NOT delete them from any other albums, just find the copy in the "camera roll" and delete that one. When your camera roll is empty, you will free up the space on your phone. There is no way to delete the whole camera roll all at once.
I have heard you can also use the image capture app on MAC computers to find and manage your photos too, but I haven't tried that yet.
