MBP Freezes After Startup - Fixed Version Cue Already!

Hi,

I installed the OS X security update last week and i had the problem where after boot-up I can see the mouse pointer but the entire desktop is frozen. I deleted Adobe Version Cue from the Startup Items and that solved the problem.

Until today, the SAME thing started happening. I have NOTHING in my startup items. At this point, I can't use the computer unless I do Safe Boot and then it works ok. The only thing I can pin it on is that the first freeze up happened when I was running Adobe Acrobat Professional 7.0 and converting a document to PDF. It froze and then every subsequent reboot freezes about 10-20 seconds after startup.

Heeeeelp 🙂

Ok in the 30 seconds I had before my machine froze, I opened the activity monitor and under all processes found that there was a root pdf process using 80-100% of the processor, after force quiting this process I haven't had the problem agian and have been able to reboot with any problems.

Hope that helps.

Enigma,

I understand your concern about updates, but don't worry too much -- your problem was very likely isolated to Version Cue.

The reason you still had problems later is likely that you did not do the complete version cue uninstall, which is much more than simply removing the startup item. (I had the same freezing problem -- Version Cue seems completely incompatible with Intel macs).

I've found the link on Adobe's site for you -- hope it helps you/others:

As long as you keep version cue out, you should be able to do the rest of your updates without worry.

Good luck!

Thanks Josh.....

I ran the uninstaller program for Version Cue and it said it was successful. Should that be sufficient to steer clear of any problems.

I'm also gun shy about the updates as well because apparently the Quicktime update also caused MS Entourage to crash when changing font or background color in email. I've also been having this problem after the update.

So perhaps with Version Cue uninstalled, I'll install all the updates except Quicktime because I don't really want the Entourage crashes.

Thanks,

Paul

Paul,

Yeah, I would certainly hope adobe's uninstaller will do the same. I can't speak to Entourage, as I use Mail/iCal, but I can say I like to steer clear of as many non-Intel programs as possible on my MacBook.

The one thing I've noticed with certainty is that the machine runs fantastic when only running Intel software, and potentially disasterous when that Rosetta translation kicks in (I could not even run MS Word alongside my regular software at acceptable speed without upgrading to the full 2GB RAM).

Good luck,
Josh

Just wanted to mention that the exact same issue has happened to me. I was converting some Illustrator files into PDF using Acrobat when the machine froze up. Ever since then the machine will lock up about 20 seconds after booting.

I still get mouse movement and the display still dims, but the OS is completely locked up.

If I reinstall the OS, all of my things on my computer will be deleted, yes? I'm having this "screen lock up but mouse still works" problem each time I reboot. It happened as I was installing Creative Suite. However, when I reboot each time I don't get ANY time to do ANYTHING. It just loads and locks up, so my computer is completely useless! So I don't know what to do. I'm new to Mac by about 2 weeks.
