Early 2011 Macbook Pro 15' - Logic Board Failure

Hey guys, first post on this website, so go easy on me!

About two weeks ago, my Early 2011 15' Macbook Pro's logic board failed on me. It was only nine months out of warranty, and costed me around $2400 at the time of purchase (high end 15' model).

I went into the Apple store to diagnosis it. They did a hardware test, and even though the logic board appeared to be fine on all of the tests they did, the guy there said that he's 100% sure that it was.

$630 later, I have a new logic board. I feel like I've been cheated by Apple, and a $2400 computer shouldn't need a $600 repair not even two years later. All anybody from Apple can say is 'Should have got Apple Care', which I find iggnorant.

Has ANYBODY else had this problem on their Macbook's around this year? Also, what would the best way to try and get compensated for this be? I have tried Customer Relations once, but he didn't seem to budge.. Just kept telling me that it was 'bad luck' and there is nothing he can do. Bad luck doesn't break an expensive machine like this so quickly.

Cheers

Bought my Mac in August 2011. Yesterday, 19th October 2016, the Logic Board failed. Mac started up with green lines and a green apple. Emailed Apple in Perth, made an appointment for the Genius Bar, went there today, had the set checked and diagnosed literally within seconds, was offered a free replacement of the Logic Board (plus warranty for same) and free labor. They will email and phone me within 3 to 5 days when the Mac is ready.

I have had siX Macs, starting with the 512 KB Macintosh in 1983, then the Fat Mac with a whopping 1 GB memory, then the tear drop lollie colored iMac, and three laptops since. Yesterday was the first time ever I had a problem with a Mac - and seeing how quickly and efficiently Apple handled that, well, I'm impressed. It's to be expected that I also use an iPad Pro and an iPod Touch and if I should ever decide to get a smart phone it's likely to be from Apple.

I have the same system. Late 2011 model. It was giving signs when I first bought it. I was going to send it back, I was in the middle of Afghanistan and I didn't want to go thru the hassle. Now 5 years later I have a broken $2800 system. Apple Genius bar recommends that I pay $580 to fix the logic board. That's not realistic. I am livid!!! A system like this is supposed to last 7-8 years. I will try a local shop and see if I can pay a realistic price for fixing the "logic board issue."

Hi Brennan

I don't know if you are aware of this, but apparently there was a defect in certain MacBook Pros from 2011. Look into extended warranties for video issues. They may refund your repair money. Mine is currently in the shop, and although my warranty is over, Apple is covering the repair. There are specific tests that had to be performed, so I don't know if yours qualifies, but it's worth a try. Only valid till Dec. 31, 2016, so hurry.
