I'm looking to sell my 1st generation iPad to a family member but don't want to sell them short if it can't be used. Are there still apps that work on it etc. I know you can't do the iOS6+ update etc. But are the apps pre 6 available etc?

Yes there are apps that will run in iOS 5.1.1. But the original iPad is behind the curve as far as the iOS is concerned and has a slower processor. I wouldn't hesitate to sell it to a friend or relative so long as the price was very low and you told them of the limitations. As time goes one Apple will update the iOS on current devices and quickly leave the original iPad farther behind.
Won't be long and the same will be true for the iPad 2. That's just the way it is with technology.

If it has iOS 5 there are still many Apps that will run on it just fine. Even if it only has 4.3 there are still quite a few Apps that can de run.
For how loing that will remain the case cannot be said though.
But the iPad is not going to self destruct or anything. It will continue to run whatever is on it just fine.
