How to I convert MTS to .MOV for free?

I have MTS files that I wish to edit in iMovie and they are unrecognizable. MPEG streamclip also doesn't recognize them.

Help?

MacBook Pro (15-inch 2.4/2.2 GHz), iOS 6.1.3

Hello, this MTS file converter I have done many times, this problem is very simple, you only need to download an easy to use conversion software can easily be completed.

http://www.mtsconverter.net

The utility has options to convert MTS for iMovie, iTunes and other Apple Products.

I hope this return to be able to help you, this software is very good with them.

It sounds easy, but I'm having problem using Media Converter to convert Mts to mov. I downloaded the media converter, I also downloaded the preset Re-wrap AVCHD for Quicktime - uncompressed Audio. When I open the Media Converter program, the drop down menu only give me options of converting to "DivX, dvd-video NTSC, dvd-video PAL, ipod/iphone (H.264), mp3, WebM. I don't see the option of mov.

i need to work on an urgent project, but can't seem to get the mov files first. What did I do wrong, and what I should do now? Thanks.

You shouldn't convert, and there's no need to convert.

Plus, converting a mts is with most of these tools a lossy process.

Option A)

Use iMovie as intended - just keep the AVCHD-structure the mts is coming from, and use iMovies own import routines.

Option B)

Use latest iMovie (vers. 10.0.x) which allows to import 'orphanized' mts ...

Option C)

Use a rewrapper (such as free Rewrap), to change the media-wrapper from mts to mov - without conversion! ...

Most 'converters' (free or $$, from 'somewhere' or AppStore) utilize the ffmpg engine... an excellent piece of open-source, but many companies 'forget' to mention it (which is mandatory with software under CC) ... plus, many of these converters 'harm' the video-stream, which causes all sorts of issues, out-of-synch, green frames, drop-outs, audio only, etc etc........

MTS/M2TS are file extension for AVCHD video clips. People, who have HD cameras like Panasonic Lumix DMC Series, Canon HG10, Sony Alpha NEX series, etc, record their important events such as commencement, wedding, baby birthday and save the recorded videos into .mts or .m2ts. Unfortunately, these clips are not compatible with most popular Apple players and portable devices.

If you want to import MTS files to iMovie, you'd better to convert MTS files to iMovie popular MOV, MP4, etc format.

Somebody recommend HandBrake, however, this tool doesn't support output MOV files.
