Encrypting a new usb stick. Error message, "A GUID Partition Table (GPT) partitioning scheme is required."

When attempting to encrypt a new usb stick I get the error message, "A GUID Partition Table (GPT) partitioning scheme is required." OS X is 10.8.3.

How do I proceed?

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.3), SD memory stick Kinston DTSE9

Yes, I tried that but it still doesn't work. Then I tried erasing it at the top level with the Mac OS Extended (Jounaled) but with the scheme od GUID partition map. AND IT WORKED!
