Friends, hoping there is a quick answer for this… If anyone knows could you kindly advise what are the best capture settings for mini DV tape shot on a camera that can only shoot in 720 P. Editing deck is a Sony DS R-11. Footage will be output for broadcast TV. Thank you in advance for your time and the best assistance for all things Apple on the planet!

A "mini-DVD tape" is simply the container.
What camera recorded the material and what is the format it recorded?
fwiw - The DSR-11 is a DV only deck. It does not work with HD formats.

The only HD format that will record to MiniDV tape is HDV. So ... should we assume that you recorded in HDV mode (720p) but want to edit in DV, since as Studio X pointed out, the DSR-11 won't play tapes recorded in the HDV format. Or should we assume that you want to edit in HD and just didn't know that the DSR-11 won't work for capturing HD? What is your delivery format going to be?

Thank you for quick replies. Tape plays fine in DSR-11, it just looked squished up as if 16:9 in 4:3. Camera used was Panasonic hvx 200. Sony MiniDV tape. I need to be able to use it in shows with footage shot in NTSC for broadcast on SD Network.

Are you certain it was recorded in 720p? If it's playing in the DSR-11 but looks 'squished,' it sounds like it may have been recorded in SD anamorphic.

cameraman said 720p BUT I captured some in Anamorphic basic and played back and it looked good! Make any sense?!?!
Some cameras will down-convert to SD over Firewire, if they're set to do so in the camera's menu. Perhaps that's what is happening. If you need to edit and deliver in HD, you'll need to recapture with the camera in the right output mode.

Wiat - I forgot that you captured with a DSR-11 VTR. The tape must have been recorded in SD.

Delivery in SD on tape or Hard Drive.
Then you're good to go! No downconversion needed. 🙂

The HVX-200 only records DV to tape. To save an HD format with the cam, you either have to send the material to a P2 card or out over firewire for live capture.
The collection of errors actually worked in your favor. Rare that it works out that way.
