Do you have the latest version of iTunes on your computer, and have you tried a different USB port on your computer ? There is also some troubleshooting for a device not appearing in iTunes on these pages :

Those pages are for devices not showing in iTunes which is the particular problem the OP is having.
Are you having a different "particular problem"?
