My ipod won't update or even turn on. When i connect it to my computer, iTunes says that it's in "recovery mode" and telling me to restore it. But i'm afraid that if i restore, then all my music, apps, and movies will be lost. Will that happen?

You have no choice but to restore from backup. See:
The iPod backup that iTunes makes does not include synced media like apps and music. They have to be in the iTunes library before your restore from iTunes backup.
You can redownload iTunes purchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
so if i restore my ipod, all my stuff thats in my iTunes library right now will still be there for me to put back onto my ipod?
Yes, restoring the iPod does not effect your iTunes library.
