My iPod is screaming!

Bit of a problem... every time I turn on my iPod, it starts screaming. I don't mean out of the headphones, I mean a wailing noise physically and literally eminates from the casing itself. I'm not imagining it; you can hear it from across the room and its definitely coming from the body of the 'pod.

It takes the form of a quiet, high pitched whirring siren that just repeats on loop whenever the iPod is turned on. Which isn't very long, as it only goes to the black apple screen, then 'unhappy iPod logo' before switching itself off (at which point the screaming noise stops).

This started about a week ago, after a period of time of the iPod arbitrarily freezing, skipping songs, then turning and unturning 'sad iPod logo' for a few days at a time. It finally froze in the middle of a song and turned itself off. Then, when I switched it on again, it started screaming.

Naturally, I cannot reset, restore, or set it into disk mode.

I don't get what could be causing this, but I suspect it's a job for MR APPLE REPAIRMAN. But is this a common problem, the screaming iPod? Or is my little digital buddy about to self destruct?

Any answers would be most useful.

Ok. There's a new twist in the tale: I went away all weekend and left the 'pod on my desk. Now I turn it on (just to see what's goin down' in the iHood) and the hard drive whirrs, instead of screaming, and it starts up normally. All the songs seem to be in place etc and playing normally.

This is annoying as I can no longer get it replaced on warranty, and I'm sure it will just screw up again in a month's time. Oh well, c'est la vie.

Also, while I'm at it, does Apple just repair any broken/messed up iPod for free if you send it to them? Is that how this deal works? Or is it more a case of needing a warranty or something? Because the last time myPod broke, we just got it replaced from the shop from whence it was bought (on their store warranty).
Am I being simple, is this like a major part of the deal that I've failed to understand or something?

Thanks again.
