After running the uninstall troubleshooter linked above (see gaffable message), the bootcamp 4.0 icon (bottom right) would still show but the application did disappear from the list of installed programs in the control panel. After this, I ran the bootcamp 6.0 install and it did manage to install itself on top of bootcamp 4.0. After computer restart, Bootcamp 6.0 is now successfully installed. Thanks so much for this solution!
The support software is not something you can uninstall. You can simply install the 5.0 software over the top. If you ever delete your Windows partition and decide to put it back later, you can use the current software directly without having to install 4.0 first.
I have tried just install on top few days ago and posted my problem (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4951322?.)
kindly further advise please
I have the same issue, made a upgrade-migration of my Windows 7 to Windows 8 and now I would like to install the Bootcamp 5 software and getting all the time: This is Windows 7 and not supported messages, even if I try to deinstall the bootcamp software from the Program Manager!
On the Windows sisw did you check out Control Panel>Programs and Features>Boot Camp Services and try to uninstall from there?
Check System Restore and see if you have a Restore Point created before you installed the Boot Camp 5 Support Software.
If you do just restore to the point before you installed.
If not...
I suggest trying to re-install Boot Camp 5 Support Software again
reboot
and then try the Control Panel>Programs and Features> Uninstall route again
If that fails then Download the Boot Camp 4 Drivers applicable to your Mac and repeat by installing the Boot Camp 4 Drivers
reboot
and then try the Control Panel>Programs and Features> Uninstall route again.
Before doing any of thie above make sure you create a System Restore Point so you at least can return to where you are.
Hi,
thank you for your advise, but:
Check System Restore and see if you have a Restore Point created before you installed the Boot Camp 5 Support Software.
=> As i wrote before, I made an OS Upgrate of Windows 7 to Windows 8. The Windows 7 was using Bootcamp 4. So, I don't have a W8 restore Point of the Bootcamp installation!
I suggest trying to re-install Boot Camp 5 Support Software again
reboot and then try the Control Panel>Programs and Features> Uninstall route again
=> Not possible, it looks like the installation routine of BC 5 is checking the existing BC installation. And as I have expirienced, even BC 4 does not want to be deinstalled and because of this I'm unable to install BC 5! BC 5 launches BC 4 uninstaller => BC 4 does not like Windows 8 => Check Mate!
If that fails then Download the Boot Camp 4 Drivers applicable to your Mac and repeat by installing the Boot Camp 4 Drivers reboot and then try the Control Panel>Programs and Features> Uninstall route again.
=> Have tried this => BC 4 does not like Windows 8!
Before doing any of thie above make sure you create a System Restore Point so you at least can return to where you are.
=> I'm afraid that I'm stuck to a manual cleaning of my regestry!
But thank you for sharing your ideas.

Joerg

I solved the problem by using Microsoft's Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter to uninstall version 4 of the program "Boot Camp Services". Once version 4 was removed I was then able to successfully run the Bootcamp 5 setup.exe program.
Similar to the experience of other people, I could not remove version 4 of Boot Camp Services from the list of programs in the Control Panel simply by clicking on the "Uninstall" option because each time I tried to uninstall it I received the following error message: "Boot Camp requires that your system is running Windows 7". The only way that I was able to uninstall version 4 of Boot Camp Services was to use Microsoft's troubleshooter
