Can RAM cause slow startup, loss of chime, and forgetting logged account?

Recently the iMac (Mid 2011 10.7.5) at work got the RAM upgraded with 2 4GB DDR3 1333 MHz.

Things I've noticed:

  • startup is much slower, with no chime
  • sometimes requires me to relog into my account when I didn't log out the day before
  • Apple Hardware Test, long and short says everything is fine
  • Disk Utility also says everything is fine other than some permissions changed
  • Ram has increased the ability to use more applications at a time
  • Spotlight sometimes doesn't work
  • Affects browser some times:
    • Chrome would load a page and then the stuff would disappear a few seconds after
    • Firefox does not do this
    • Restarting fixes it

So I'm just wondering if this is just an inconvenience or do I have a serious problem here. Another computer with the same upgrade does not have any start up problems like I do. 😕

Defective RAM could certainly cause the symptoms you're experiencing, though it's not the only possible cause. If, however, the problems only appeared after the RAM was upgraded and nothing else was changed, bad RAM would be my first suspect. A software-based hardware test often will not detect bad RAM since the RAM has to work well enough for the test to run. If you have an IT department that performed the upgrade, contact them and have them reinstall the original RAM and see if matters improve. If they do, then bad RAM is likely.

Regards.

To test the RAM on an Intel Mac you need Memtest86+, which you must burn to a CD and then boot from that CD. This should test the RAM more fully than the Apple Hardware Test.

Get the latest version here. You want the pre-compiled bootable ISO (.zip)

http://www.memtest.org/#downiso

Note, when running the test the keyboard will not function and the only way to stop the test will be to do a hard shutdown, holding the power button until it does. It will keep on running loop after loop until you shutdown. Doing a hard shutdown booted from the CD won't harm your Mac or the drive directory.

It's time consuming, but it may be necessary to run several loops.

That sounds long enough. Doesn't sound like RAM is the problem. Can you go into Console in Utilities>system.log and find a bootup sequence (just those messages) that shows the time stamps. Maybe we can see where it's hanging.

Or try doing a full shutdown and then post the full boot sequence, including the time stamps.

Might start with localhost bootlog[**]: BOOT_TIME

You're getting to the login window in half a minute. After that, I'm not seeing any serious hangs. This is probably nothing, but seeing a few of these.

-iMac com.apple.dock.extra[223]: Could not connect the action buttonPressed: to target of class NSApplication

If you are still booted from this boot, what is process 223, in Activity Monitor>All Processes?

Did you get the chime or not? The chime indicates the POST (Power On Self Test) completed successfully.

After you look in Activity Monitor, do a PRAM Reset. Cmd-Option(alt)-P-R as it's starting up. All four keys together, see if it produces two chimes in succession. When it does, let go to finish booting. That may restore the chime.

Apr 12, 2013 9:33 AM in response to WZZZ

Activity Monitor just calls it com.apple.dock.extra. Its parent is launchd (1) and the directories and files it opens are within /System/Library.

As for the chime, I'm pretty sure it didn't. However, I do remember it did chime yesterday when I rebooted to test the memory. It happens intermittently. It does seem like when startup takes awhile when there is no chime. Perhaps it's only detectable when startup is slow but that's would make catching it random.

Sorry to bother you again, but my computer has shown symptons again. Here is the entire log before I had to restart to "fix" it. Any help is much appreciated.
